death Certificate
« on: Wednesday 02 May 12 03:50 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor John Moore, born 1820, died 1896 at Pancras in London.
He is listed on the Free BDM's however the GRO say they have no record of this person.
He is listed on 1b 45 yet the GRO say there is no such person when I applied for his death cert.
Will someone check for me please or suggest what may be wrong ?

Many thanks,

Arty ::)

Hi

The GRO Index is as clear as a bell.

John Moore, 76, Pancras Reg Dist, Sept Qtr 1896 Vol 1b Page 45

If this matches exactly what you put in the application form then you could try the Local Register office which I think is Camden but it looks as if they charge a search fee.

Hi Andy.

Thanks for your qiuck answer.

Think I'll leave things for now; with the search fee, it's a bit costly for me to go to Camden.  Thought I had the details correct so don't know what the score is at the GRO.

Thanks anyway,

Arty ???

Hi arty

When you applied to the GRO did you say Yes to the GRO References and just enter name, year, Quarter, Reg District, Vol & Page no? If so, did you keep a copy?

Andy

Have double-checked all details (inc.death !) and they say "there is no trace of the above mentioned person at the ref.you quoted"

They are refunding so it could be worse but I would love to have had the death certificate. Served for years in India in the army and became a Chelsea Pensioner.  Love to know if he just died of old age or what.  Never mind.

Thankyou everyone,

Arty

Back again folks !!!  Yippee !!
Have just found the death ref on the All England and Wales Free BMD Death Index which must be different to the Free UK Gen.
The first ref. was wrong !   It should have been the Sept qtr so will send again with same ref.but corrected qtr.

Thanks to those who answered,

Arty  ;D

I was just going to say can you ring them, but have just seen where you live ;D

I also heard once of someone who put the surname where the christian name should go and vice versa- they didn't find that person either!

Well that's a bummer eh?
