I wonder if readers have seen this blog ? It's full of good solid advice and examples, highly recommended for anyone interested in restoration:

I've worked on a number of my own photos using Photoshop, my best advice is 'gently does it', the art is in making the restoration appear invisible. A couple of examples of my own work:
