Marriage Banns
« on: Monday 30 April 12 19:35 BST (UK) »
I was looking at some marriages on Lancs OPC for St. Leonards, Middleton around 1815 and I noticed that virtually all said 'Married by Banns with consent of parents'.

I thought this applied when one or both parties were minors,(under 21?).

Is this an error by the minister or something more?

Any opinions?

Eric.

Hi,

I have just noticed your query re Middleton Parish (St. Leonard's) records on Lancs OPC - why don't you use the e-mail facility and ask Ken (who manages the site) to check out the certificates for you?  He might have a copy of the original of your family which might have more information than available on the web site.

I am transcribing records for Lancs OPC and have some baptism and burial records for St. Leonard's but haven't done any marriages for them - now struggling with baptisms for St. John's Salford - all in Latin. (Ugh !)

Good luck
Barbara

Hi Barbara.

It wasn't one particular marriage. I looked up one of mine and I was surprised to see that they may have been younger than I thought, then I noticed that quite a lot said  'With consent of parents', which I thought was rather unusual.

Just wondered if anyone had an opinion on it.

Thanks Eric.

I think the vicars were asked to check that under age people had consent of parents. Some of the vicars got mixed up and ticked the box, so to speak, for everybody. I think this was early 1800s but I'm waiting for Stan Mapstone to correct me, claytonbradley

I've found the "with consent of parents" mentioned for whole batches at some churches, even when I was certain both parties I was interested in were over 30!
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

I seem to remember that the "with consent of" bit was pre-printed onto registers.  If I'm right, it may simply be that the incumbent didn't bother to cross it out?

The new type of register came in 1812 or 13 and some vicars thought as it was there, that they had to fill it in, even if the people ceoncerned were of full age, cb

 I've just looked at 3 images-1819, 1827 & 1832.

The latter had 'with Consent of' pre printed followed bya space to be written in.  The earlier two didn't.

Seems anything might have been possible  and 'with consent of parents' shouldn't be relied upon.

Or, did the person transcribing, see the pre-printed bit and assume it applied? :-\
