change of name
« on: Monday 30 April 12 13:18 BST (UK) »
i was wondering if anyone can help!  i have been researching the Roe/Rowe family   in the late 1890`s  my relative  changed the spelling of the family surname from Rowe to Roe  the first 3 or 4 children had their names spelt rowe on the certificates  then for the remain 4 it went to Roe
is there anywhere this change of name  would have been officially recorded ? Any help gratefully received

  kind regards

The family weren't really changing their surname- such spelling variations were quite common and it's not unusual to find two or more spellings of the same surname in one document.
If a person wanted to actually change the spelling of their surname they could just start using the 'new' name without going through any legal process.

Hi Martin, unsure if you will get this but Im gonna try anyhow.  I just joined Rootschat as I found your google map re the roe family.  My great grand mother was Letitia Roe (Baldoyle) and her husband was Paul Roe.  He died at sea in New Jersey in 1911 on the SS Delaware.  He is buried I believe out there.  Do you have any information at all about his family.  I have drawn a complete blank at him.  Dont even know where he was born.  It would be awesome if you could let me know.  Much obliged, Joan McHugh

The reason you got that error message, Martin, is that Joan only has 1 posts- new members usually need 3 to use PM system
