King Family, Lasswade
« on: Saturday 28 April 12 15:36 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on the King family who lived in the Lasswade area 1891/1901.
The family consisted of John King, Mary Ann King nee Coyne & Margaret Coyne Mother in Law. I have details of 1891 Census showing them living in Lasswade and John working as a Shale Miner also 1901 Census shows them living in School House, Lasswade and John now working as Coal Miner ( Rewer) with the children.
I have met a blank wall trying to trace family and any help will be very welcome.

Thanks

Hi Celts

When you say you have hit the wall, is that trying to go back to previous generations or forward with descendants?

I think this should be Hewer, see www.mininginstitute.org.uk/library/definitions/Hewer.html

Interesting resource here regarding the shale mining industry, see www.scottishshale.co.uk/index.html

Peter, what did it say on John's marriage cert regarding his parents, alive/deceased and occupation for his father?

I can see these birth entries to parents Stephen King and a Mary Tolan:

Laurence - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F52Y-3QY
Mary - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPYL-FVC

Probably just a co-incidence as this couple show in Scotland for 1881, but no John showing on the listing unfortunately:

Stephen King 50, Plater'S Lab. In Shipyard, b. Ireland
Mary King 46 b. Ireland
Laurence King 14 b. Ireland
Mary King 8 b. Ireland
Thomas Meallie 48 lodger, b. Ireland
Laurence Folan 26 lodger, b. Ireland

Address: 54 High St, Dumbarton

This couple show in Dumbarton right up to 1901.

Monica

PS: I am guessing the 1911 census entries didn't provide any clues of place of birth in Ireland....

Thank you for your thoughts & ideas on how to progress my search. I'm looking both back & forward in my search to try to identify where the family originate from & how the family moved about on arriving in Scotland in the late 1880's or early 1890's. I do have marriage certificate which shows John's parents as Stephen King & Sarah Folan both born in Ireland. Posts with information on Stephen King & Sally Tolan  or Mary Tolan are interesting & worth further checking to see if maybe a spelling error somewhere. On the Marriage Certificate both parents were shown as alive with occupation of Stephen given as Farmer. My thoughts on this occupation is it was more of a Smallholding than Farm he was involved in & a rented holding rather than owned. Mary Ann's father Michael Coyne was shown as deceased on the same Certificate.1911 Census still showed just Ireland & check of Church Marriage records were inconclusive as well. Same story when I visited Dublin. Very frustrating especially as it is such recent history & I am sure the family still live in the Edinburgh/Borders area.
Thank you again for your ideas any other information or ideas will be most welcome. Looks like I shall have to spend some time in Edinburgh on my next visit to UK & Scotland.
