Burton from Sutton-in-Ashfield
« on: Saturday 28 April 12 11:46 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone!

I am trying to make the connection between a few Rev. J. Burton's I have come across.

I know that Joseph Burton born in 1835 Nassau, Bahamas was my great great grandfather. His father was Rev. Joseph Burton (first Baptist Missionary to the Bahamas) b. 11 Dec 1801 in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts.

I have come across a Rev. Joshua Burton, born in Foxton I believe, who I think may be his Rev. Joseph Burton's father. I think he may at a stage also been a Rev in Barnaby? I also have seen mentioned another Rev. Joshua Burton who could possibly have been his grandfather? Unfortunately, I haven't found enough information to connect the dots?

I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Hello.... :)

I also have Baptists in Nottinghamshire and some of the records haven't survived, so where to start? and it is difficult trying to get enough information to join the dots.

It does strike me that the Joshua Burtons are related....

It seems that there have been two Joshua Burton's  serving as ministers at Sutton in Ashfield and by the looks of it one having died and likely buried there... I don't know if there are any surviving burial records, I haven't seen any and the Baptist Chapel is long gone.

If you haven't seen these articles they might help with dates.... and some of the places begin to make sense such as the Particular Baptists records you have been given on another thread say "place of abode as Leeds and from one of the links below mentions Bramley ,Yorkshire (which is West Leeds), and one Joshua dies in 1817 and the other in 1830..... it would be handy if we knew their ages at death...  :-\

Joshua Burton became pastor on 25 October 1785, dismissed
from Bramley in Yorkshire......

1789, when in the little meeting at Nottingham Carey urged
that we must expect great things from God, Attempt great things
for God. Next year Burton left for Foxton, and so came near
to Kettering, where in 1792 he had the joy of promising half a
guinea as a founder of the Particular Baptist Society for the
Propagation of the Gospel among the Heathen.

Whitehead was succeeded in 1815 by Joshua Burton, son
of the third pastor;
but he died at the end of 1817.

(Note: Joseph Whitehead died of consumption at the early age of 27 years, and was interred in the burial-ground attached to the Particular Baptist Chapel  in 1811)

Joshua Burton had brought to Foxton something learned
from Abraham Booth at Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Mr. Joshua Burton commenced his labours at Foxton in October, 1790, when the church consisted of only eighteen members, all of whom were deceased in the year 1823. After a pastorate of forty years, about the same number remained at the time of his death, which took place in 1830

Hello Stacy... :)

You are welcome to the help but bear with me.... I had some stuff typed up and some gremlin has eaten it!  ;D
I will have to go over everything again and retype it all..... but here is a start.

Non Conformist Records (via Ancestry)
MARY BURTON - born 27th June 1773 - baptism 28th July 1773 at Bramley - father JOSHUA BURTON
JOSHUA BURTON - born 30th Jan 1775 - baptism 18th Sept 1775 - father JOSHUA BURTON
ANN BURTON -born 28th Sept 1776 - baptism 18th Sept 1775 - father Joshua Burton

The above baptism of Joshua and Mary according to BMDRegisters took place at - Register of Births and Baptisms at Queen Street Independent Chapel (formerly Whitehall Chapel) in Leeds, Yorkshire from 1756 to 1791

What is really interesting is the entries are the exact same dates for Joshua and Ann who were also recorded at Sutton in Ashfield, Particular Baptists..... you have already been given the details on your other thread.

So, it is looking like Joshua Burton senior brought his family from the Leeds area to Sutton in Ashfield.

Oh Shiela,  I can't thank you enough! You are putting so much work into this for me! At the moment my time is not my own, so am collecting it all until I have a moment to put all the pieces together - hopefully in the next couple of weeks!

It is so frustrating, as I want to get stuck in!!!!

How fascinating, so you think they may have come from Leeds?? Wow, that is going to open some new doors to research....

Would you mind PMing me your email address?

A little bit more...... :)

Excerpts from the book "A History of Sutton in Ashfield", by George G Bonser (a local historian of his day)

The Particular (or Strict) Baptist Society.

The early records of this society have disappeared, the only authentic register dating 1779, the earlier part having been copied from the fragmentary evidence by J. Burton, the Minister, probably.

It is of rag-made paper, bound in parchment, sixteen and a quarter inches high, and six inches wide.
The first two pages give the persons dying and who were buried in our Meeting House Yard

Some of the names  of the Church Members.....

Peter Fletcher, Joseph Hickton,Mary Hickton, John Hickton, Hannah Unwin, John Whitehead, Sarah Wright, Matthew Wright, ... Beardsmore, Nickalson, Stenson, Hardwick Wharmby, Joseph Radford, Tealor. Earp, Birks, Farnsworth.......

Pastors of the Church

1760 - Abraham Booth
1770 - Edward Briggs, from Stanton
A memo March 15th 1778 that day a dissolution is made of the pastorall office of Edward Briggs.
1778 - 24th April. This day Mr Joshua Burton came to Sutton to exercise his Ministerial Gifts among us.
1778 - 25th October - This day Mr Joshua Burton was received into the Church Fellowship. He died 30th December 1816 - He seems to have become a General Baptist.
1794 - 16th February - Mr Briggs came to Sutton with his family from Burton
1801 - 15th February -  The Church agreed to give Brother John Whitehead the Pastoral Charge... on 28th April he accepted.
John Whitehead, Pastor of this Church died 16th February 1814.

Mr Burton appears to have acted as Deacon to Mr Whitehead.

....... the list does continue after this.

Register of Burials has a total of 24 person from 1775 to 1787.... but no Burton's... mostly names from the above Church Members list.

Still have a few more bits to be added......

Sheila.

Last bit for now  :D

BAPTIST  & Marriages
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hitch/gendocs/bapt.html
Baptists recorded the births of children and the baptism of adults. Few Baptist records survive from before 1688. There are many registers of births, baptisms and burials, but very few marriages were recorded before 1754. After 1754 Baptists had to marry in Anglican churches and so should be recorded in their registers. Baptist marriages became legal again in 1837 if a civil registrar was in attendance.

~ ~ ~
Some of the names I mentioned in reply 5 now seem relevant.......

We know that JOSHUA BURTON was married to a Mary as that is the name given in the registers.

But it wouldn't surprise me that this could be a remarriage after Joshua came to Sutton in Ashfield.

It is with great interest that I respond to this thread of so long ago.  Whilst assisting my aunt yesterday in researching the surnames of one our family tree, we decided to look further back for any more information on another member of the tree, the Rev. Joshua Burton.  Indeed, my aunt has a letter, which references either Mary or Ann Burton as being the addressees grandmother, who during her younger years had seen John Wesley preach at about the time he created the Methodist Church.

We sadly haven't been able to go any further back than the Burton's, but our branch of this family subsequently found it's way to Daventry, then to Glossop and finally to Salford in Greater Manchester.
