Anyone know where Rothiemoon is?
« on: Saturday 28 April 12 09:59 BST (UK) »
I am researching the family of

John Grant (birth date unknown) and his son Alexander Grant born 11th April 1811 in Rothiemoon, Parish of Abernathy.

However, having trouble locating the place on a map.

Is it possible the place no longer exists or is it perhaps called something else?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Porgi,

It would be the Parish of Abernethy. This is one of only a couple of references I can find, dated 1812 :

Hi ,

The freeCEN website has references to Rothiemoon in 1841
Looking at nearby addresses gives Birchfield and Mendui

Thankyou to all with suggestions.

A couple of really useful links provided  :)

Granttown on Spey and Nethy Bridge provides some excellent markers.

Must include on my itinerary for a visit whilst in Inverness later this year.

Noticed "Rothymoon" while looking at a map just now.  Links:

John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland 1832
Nairn and Elgin

Follow the Spey down to Abernethy and you will see Rothymoon just to the left.

Hi there...... Yes I do!!  I was also searching and found my relative living with a family named Grant (Samuel and Sarah - so not the same as yours but likely related?).  'My' Grants lived at Duackbridge and are on the census records around 1851, 1861 and 1871 Duackbridge is also not easy to find and it is a very small area of Nethybridge.  When I investigated further into a death certificate the informant lived at "Rothiemoon".  When I visited in October last year I found Rothiemoon to be a small area along a track running north behind Duackbridge Lodge.  I have an Ordinance Survey Map 403 Cairn Gorm and Aviemore and the reference is 995211 (or is it the other way round - sorry I can't remember if it is 'eastings' first or 'northings'!) However, Rothiemoon is clearly marked north of Duackbridge! Good luck in your research. I have been helped enormously by members on Rootschat.

Thankyou so much for such precise directions.

I have a trip booked to Scotland in September and plan to visit as many 'family' sites as we can find so this is particularly helpful.

My Grant was Alexander b 1811 married to Anne McDonald who became a carpenter/coachbuilder at Edinburgh Castle before migrating to Australia with his family in 1853.

I gather there are many Grants in this area due to the naming of Granttown on Spey.

Thanks & Regards

Hi,

Pretty sure it would be in Netty bridge.

My ancestor, Malcolm Grant, was living in Bridge-End. I would appreciate if you could let me know if you have find anything (or any other person related to)about Bridge-end. On the birth record of Malcolm Grant's son, William, in 1796,'' Alexander Fraser in Rothiemoon'' was witness with John Grant. I know from other source  that some Fraser  was living on the Grant's land in the Parish of Abernathy around year 1750 (maybe on Rothiemoon?).

Thank you
