James Brooks
« on: Friday 27 April 12 23:31 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information about the parents of James Brooks of Nottinghamshire. He was a maltster and was born 1797-1801 in East Leake (according to either his marriage record or the census record). He married Hannah Ball 27 February 1823 in Gotham. They had 8 children. He passed away 27 February 1842 in Radford of jaundice. I have found him on the 1841 census, but am completely stumped on his parents!

Any info is greatly appreciated!
Kati

Hi Kati,

What makes you say he was born in East Leake? Neither Marriage records, nor the the 1841 census, give a place of birth.

I see he is 40 in the 1841 census, so that implies a date of birth between 1796-1801. Ages on the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.

His burial gives him age 45 - so birth c.1797. Is that consistent with the age on his death certificate?

Sneinton St Stephen burial
02 Mar 1842, James BROOKS of Manvers Street, age 45

There is a baptism for James Brooks in Ruddington (neighboring Gotham) in 1796, but that is not him as he appears in later censuses. There is also a James Brookes baptised in Nottingham St Mary in 1799, but he died age 17 in 1816, so cannot be your James.

I just checked and the baptisms at East Leake from 1787-1797 are missing from the Notts FHS CD.  >:(

Looking at the census and marriage record, you're right! It doesn't show James' birthplace as East Leake and I'm not quite sure why I thought that was the case... Maybe I found something and didn't write it down? I'm really not sure why I have that listed.

I'm hoping the gentleman from eastleake-history.org will have some information on James!

Hi Kati.

James Brooks was my great-great-great grandfather and I am pretty confident that I have been able to track down his parents and another generation back from them.  Here is an extract from my studies  ...

William Brooks married Christian ? on ?? 1755 ? at St Michael, Sutton Bonington, Nottinghamshire.  They had 5 children:

•   Susannah was christened on 12 Oct 1755 in Sutton Bonington.
•   Hugh (great-great-great-great grandfather) was christened on 28 July 1758 in Sutton Bonington.
•   Israel was christened on 10 Dec 1760 in Sutton Bonington.
•   Christian (girl) was christened on 21 May 1763 in Sutton Bonington.
•   James was christened on 22 Sep 1765 in Sutton Bonington.  He (described then as a servant-man from Kingston) married Mary Kirk at Sutton Bonington on 30 August 1787.  He died on 6 Jan 1847 in Widmerpool Nottinghamshire where he is buried.

Hugh married Ann Townshend born ? at St Michael, Sutton Bonington, on 15 July 1782.  They had 7 children:

•   William was christened on 11 January 1783 in Sutton Bonington.
•   Sarah was christened on 4 April 1784 in Sutton Bonington.
•   Elizabeth was christened on 28 January 1786 in Sutton Bonington.
•   Christian (girl) was born on 20 December 1787 and christened on 20 January 1788 in Sutton Bonington.
•   John was christened on 29 February 1792 in Ruddington.
•   Hugh was christened on 13 July 1794 in Ruddington.
•   James Brooks (great-great-great grandfather) who was christened on 29 May 1796 in Ruddington.

On 7 July 1823, James married Hannah Ball (b. 15 July 1801 East Leake, Nottinghamshire, d. 1864 in Basford Nottingham) in Gotham, Nottinghamshire two miles north of East Leake.

(Hannah’s father was William Ball b. 1753 and d. 1841 in East Leake and her mother Mary Wotton ,b. 28 December 1757 in Keyworth and d. 15 July 1845 in East Leake)  William’s father was Richard Ball, b. 1715 Nottinghamshire and his mother was Mary Rowson b. 1715 who married Richard in East Leake on 13 November 1739).

In 1824 James Brooks and Hannah were living in Bradcote, East Leake, Nottinghamshire.  He was working as a labourer.  (Henry Brooks’ birth certificate)

They had 4 (?) children :

•   Henry (Elder) (great-great-grandfather) was born in 1824 in East Leake and baptised there on 29 August 1824.
•   Mary born in 1832.
•   Harriett born in 1835.
•   Robert born in 1832.

A Hugh Brooks (possibly great-great-great-great grandfather) is recorded in the burial records for the Basford District in March 1838.

Most of my information came from the Family Search website.  I hope this is of interest to you.

Thanks Larkspur.  Your reference to William Brooks' burial in 1790 gave me a route back to his parents.  More research underway !
