Hiram Dobbins 1911 census
« on: Friday 27 April 12 16:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone with access to the 1911 census could help me with Hiram Dobbins, born illegitimately in 1910 in Greenock to Jane Johnston and James Dobbins.

I am particularly interested to find the place of birth of James Dobbins, who was in fact a seaman and could indeed have been at sea at the time!

Any information would be most gratefully received.

With thanks

Lesley

Hi Lesley

Sadly, no one has access to the Scottish 1911 census except through the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Occasionally someone going to one of the main genealogy centres in Scotland can look up entries for people if within time limits of their day  :)

Just adding one of the previous post on the family www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,520341.0.html (there are more).

Monica

Added: James Dobbins aged 26 shows in Greenock for 1911 with Hiram (showing as aged in months, down as '0' on the index) also in the household - likely the entry you need....

Hello Lesley - please pm me - went and downloaded the4 census entry for you.  James, Jane and Hiram were all at home on the day.

They're named downwards in the order of James, Hiram and Jane.

James 26 yrs b. Renfrew , Port Glasgow, Hiram 9 months b.? West Indies (West Something   :) and Jane 25 yrs old b.  Renfrew, Greenock,  Married for 2 years and with 1 child born to them during that period.

Regards,   Steve    :)

The birth is indexed for Greenock 1910 but no marriage record in the index for the parents

Steve, from that 1911 snippet you posted, likely some errors from what else Lesley has mentioned. I thought, as here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,528286.0.html that James Dobbins was the one born in the West Indies.

Sancti, again from other info posted on other posts, the marriage for Hiriam's parents does not look to have taken place until 1916.

Thank you Monica, Steve and Sancti

I do have copies of Hiram's birth certificate and James and Janes's marriage certificate, but really wanted to confirm where James was born.  It was thought to be Jamaica but, as West Indies is indicated on the census, that is not necessarily so.  I have tried researching James Dobbins in Jamaica but to no avail I'm afraid.  Perhaps I should try islands!!

My thanks and regards
Lesley
