How do I find where someone is buried?

Hi

My Great Great Grandad died on 23rd March 1889 at 23 Lordsmill Street Chesterfield. Can anyone advise me as to what the best way is to find out where he is buried?

Hi Bev

First of all, do you know what religion he was. Then try to find the nearest Churches to where he lived and try to contact them.
If Chesterfield as a Town cemetery, then try the Parks Department, they are responsible for the Towns cemeteries. If he is buried there, they should be able to list the people in that grave.

Hello Bev..your problem is that Chesterfield is a Civil registration district..I presume you got the death from that source..via death certificate or from Bmd'd............Trouble is that half of derbyshire comes under the Chestefield aegis..the other big Registration District is Bakewell.......which means your man could have died an buried in anyone of probably 30 Parishes in and around Chesterfield.
I am a Derbyshire specialist and have a very large collection of parish records..I'll have a look for you but no promises.

Hi Bev,

     Lordsmill Street is in Chesterfield (quite near the Crooked spire).  I had ancestors who lived & died there.  If he is not in St. Mary's churchyard - try Chesterfield council  (cemeteries department)  they are very helpful in tracing burials.  The cemetery is on Spital Hill ( about half a mile) from Londsmill Street.

Thanks for the pointers.  I have tried the family history surname search and nothing shouts out at me but thanks for the link, I can use it for my other ancestors.

I think I will try ringing the cemteries department on Monday and see what I can find out.  I didn't think about him being at St Marys but it would be a possibility as his daughter, my Great Grandma was married there.

We've just arrived home from a weekend near Chesterfield but we found it a bit wet to visit the Spital Cemetery.
