PAUPERS GRAVES - AYR
« on: Wednesday 25 April 12 21:55 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information regarding the location and/or the recording of paupers graves in Ayr in the early 1900s?

Thanks

Brian

Have you tried the local archives? In my experience the staff in most archive services are very helpful.

There is a paupers grave in Ayr Cemetery, as my wife has an ancestor buried there.  It is unmarked area and all that staff said was the person was buried there but cannot say exactly as the graves were not allowed to be marked.

Thanks bigt, that's great information. From what you said, am I to understand that the cemetery staff have a list of those buried in the unmarked paupers area?

Hi Its quite a while since I was at Holmston cemetery, sometimes there is a chap at the gate house, think its just luck or maybe when a funeral is on,he has books he can refer too,it will give you the name and date of burial, however if its a paupers grave he can only point you in the direction if the area, hope this helps, maybe phone south ayrshire council and make enquiries, the number is 0300 123 0900,wait for the option to speak to an operator, they are very helpful.

   Regards
