 I only gave a very brief extract from the book. Author mainly picked his place names because of them been in "Northumbrian" vernacular.

He states that in 1580 the road/street was called " Clatterandway", becoming known as "Clattering Causeway" by 1702.

I guessed it was to do with Northumbrian dialect. I did mean to put county not country - a case of not checking my spellings before posting!

Sounds an interesting book. I'll have to get a copy. I'm fascinated by the derivation of words.

 My copy was "withdrawn from stock" of Northumberland County Library. I think I bought it from Blyth or Cowpen branch.

 It has helped solve many a conundrum.
