Altrincham help wanted
« on: Monday 19 June 06 09:57 BST (UK) »
John Berry (b Altrincham c1818) married Harriet Cooper (b Altrincham c1818) in Manchester Cathedral in 1834. They had 3 children (at least) by the names of John, William and Hugh. John senior was a butcher in Altrincham at the time of the 1941 census. There was another butcher in Altrincham by the name of William Berry who was about 20 years older than John. William had his father Hugh living with him at the time of the census.

On the basis that boys were very often named after their father, grandfather (and possibly in this case, their great grandfather), there is a strong likelihood of John senior being the son of William and grandson of Hugh. Unfortunately I have been unable to find his baptismal record or anything else that would conclusively prove that this is the case. I have found people researching the Berry family who have included the elder Hugh in the tree, so it would be very useful to be able to prove this link rather than rely on a series of coincidences, however compelling.

The Altrincham baptism of Harriet Cooper would be very useful as I do not have her father's name. Her mother Sarah, b 1783 was resident with her daughter in the 1851 census.

Any help or pointers gratefully received.
Thanks

Am pleased to say that the necessary information (and proof) has come to light in a very satisfactory way. Whilst idly googling on various combinations of the names/places and occupations, I found a family tree in which Mary Ardern is shown as marrying William Berry in 1816 and their son John was born the following year. That fits with all the information I hold and there is a reference to a census entry I have dug up for confirmation.

Now I need to read through this other tree to discover all the other people my 3xg gramdmother was descended from. I wish all my problems could be resolved in such a pleasant way.

If there is a secret, it is to make use of information you get from the most unlikely sources to refine your search. I put in the address from a census together with the full name of my rellie. To be honest, I thought I had done this previously, but obviously not. It may be that I did not use the advanced search facility to refine the search and the pages I eventually found were way down the likely 200,000 hits that one generally finds. Now I have a link to a tree headed by a man born in 1605 and who is suspected to be the son of an illegitimate son of the Mayor of Altrincham. What a change from generations of ag labs.

Yours smugly
Nick

Hi Nick
I shall give it a go.  You might know, all my Mum's side are from Altrincham....and the trouble I have been having trying to trace them is nobody's business.

Do you know if there are some pages missing off the CD census for 1861 and 71?  I was wondering if my Bowyers could be on some missing pages.

Do you know what the term 'unfilmed pages' means?
And how do you get to see the unfilmed pages?

Kind regards

Take a look at the Ardern family pages - they refer to a number of resources. I only found it yesterday and haven't yet had time for a good trawl through. Googling 'Ardern Altrincham' should get you there.

I've got to go to work now but will have a think and see if there are any other ideas come to mind. Do any of your lines include a Berry or an Ardern? If so, we must compare notes. I had a reply from a modern day Ardern in NZ who must be a very distant cousin of mine.

Good luck
Nick

Sorry no Ardern or Berry Nick.  Mine are Bowyer and the dreaded 'Jones'.

I'll take a look at the Ardern site.

Many thanks, don't work too hard  :D

The Ardern site is very nice.

I googled Bowyer and discovered that my cousin Karl (whom I met on here) had already put a post up about our mutual ancestor on Rootsweb, in which he said he had got his Death Cert.  I wish he had told me, as I sent for it a couple of weeks ago thinking he hadn't go it, costing £7.  aaargh! a lack of communication.

Thanks for the tip anyway Nick.  I shall use it again in the future.

Kind regards
