Brick wall hit! Where to go from here?
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 13:48 BST (UK) »
Good after noon Rootschatters :)
After taking a few months off from the old family tree I am picking it up again!
BUT, I have hit a brick wall where my gr gr grandmother came from.
Her marriage was not on SP and I had to wait till the catholic parish registers became available and finally got the date of marriage of 15/07/1864 at St Patrick's Anderson!
She was Margaret Harvie/Harvey and she married John Doherty from Donegal and they settled back there when married.
Unfortunately there is no mention of a father's name on the catholic register only the witnesses so I can't get any further back with censuses etc :(
According to my mum, gran was adamant that she was from Campsie, but unfortunately she is no longer with us so I can't ask her any more questions.
I thought that maybe there might be banns or the like in a Glasgow newspaper maybe :-\
Maybe some more experienced RChatters might give me some ideas or is this as far as I will get?
They must have moved back to Donegal fairly quick to not have registered the marriage with the registrar.

Regards
Annette

Have you tried the Margaret Harvey who married a Daniel Docherty in Glasgow High Church district 1864?

Hi Jim :)
Yep, found that one a few years ago before I found it recently on the CPR.
Thought it fitted and that maybe the grooms name was transcribed wrong but his fathers name is wrong too :(
Have hit this brick wall with Margaret, and cant work my way back anymore. If I even had the GRO copy with an address on it, it would be something to go on!
Have got further with her husbands side but Maggie is driving me mad!
She's down as 55 in 1901 irish census,72 in the 1911 one and 78 when she died in 1927 ??? :-\

Hi sancti!
She was in Donegal Ireland in the 1901 census. When she married my grgr grandad in 1864 I think they moved back over here fairly quickly as their first son Charles was born on 15/07/1865, their 1st wedding anniversary.
It's going backwards where I have the problem.Don't have a father's name or address to get them on the 1841/51/61 scottish census. ::)
I think I may just have to admit defeat on this one :(

Annette, a lot of folk came from Ireland to the West of Scotland as seasonal workers, Ayrshire spuds for example, which could explain a sudden departure back to Donegal to attend to the work on their  own croft.

Were the witnesses family members?

Any clues in the childen's names?

There was a tradition in Scotland to name the first daughter after the maternal grandmother, and the second son after the maternal grandfather.

If they married in Anderston then that may have been where Margaret was from.... there are 2 hits for a Margaret Harvey aged between 15 - 25 in Anderston on the 1861 census.

It may be worth checking them to see if any names tie in?

Hi Skoosh,My gr gr gr grandmother moved to Glasgow 1850ish with 5/6 children after her husband died in Donegal but not sure if Margaret Harveys husband John Doherty stayed or went to Glasgow :-\
All I know is that he went back when he married Margaret Harvey circa 1864.

Were the witnesses family members?

Sancti, the witnesses were Michael Grant and Elizabeth Grant(The groom's sister)

.

Jimster was looking at that. The first child was named Charles after father's father. The second child was called James which maybe Margaret's dad,not too sure :-\
The 3rd child was called John after his father which fits the irish/scottish naming pattern. The first daughter(4th child) was called Mary Jane(mother's mother?) and 5th child has same name Margaret as  father's mother
Will have to look at the census for those Margaret that you found and for any James and or Mary Janes
