Ruddock / Burley / Holmes / Lambert
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 13:15 BST (UK) »
Parish Records for Deal & Walmer and the records for St Mary's Church, Walmer.
Thomas BURLEY m Emma Blown (8th Sept 1892)
12/3/1894 Elizabeth Esther
25/8/1895  Thomas
15/7/1896  JohnGilbert
27/8/1899  Pleasant Mary
Emma BLOWN, aged 20 of Lower Walmer, daughter of James Thomas BLOWN, Bricklayer married Thomas BURLEY, 33, a Private in the Royal Marines Light Infantry stationed at Walmer Barracks.

However the 1901 census shows the same family living in Otley, Yorkshire.

Thomas Ruddock   49 "Fitter/Printers engineer", born about 1852, Fewston Yorkshire
Emma Ruddock        28  Emma and all children listed as born in Deal, Kent
Elizabeth Ruddock    7
Thomas Ruddock   5
John G Ruddock   4
Mary Ruddock       1

Thomas Ruddock died in Wharfedale in (Sept 1/4) 1906, Emma Ruddock (nee Blown) also died in 1906(June 1/4) in Leeds, the family was then split up the two boys emigrated to Australia, one in 1914(my grandfather) the other in 1922 using the name RUDDOCK . The parents appear to have died within 6 months of each other leaving the four children aged from 12 down to 6 years.
My grandfather Thomas Ruddock died in 1949 and his/my branch of the family has had no knowledge of the two sisters Elizabeth and (Pleasant) Mary.
From what I can find it appears that Elizabeth marries using the maiden name BURLEY to a Robert HOLMES in 1913 and Mary marries using the maiden name RUDDOCK in 1921 to a Fred LAMBERT.
I was wondering if any listers have information or family trees on these “GIRLS” who would now be 118 and 113. I am curious to hear if anyone knows the real reason for Thomas’s name change to Burley (I believe it was his mother’s maiden name and his father remarried but would love to contact a family member who knows the history)
Listers in the Kent forum have already helped getting me to this point, with church records and I have purchased the military records from the National Archives.

Thomas b 1895 - d1949 married a died in Australia, this is where we all now call home. But we would also love to know what happened to his parents, which made grandpa leave England.

Sorry the post is so long but I am trying to give as much info as possible.
Thanks

Hi:  following on from our conversation on another thread regarding Otley and burial records.

As Emma Ruddock was the first of the couple to die, and the registration is in Leeds Registration District, I would suggest that you obtain her death certificate in order to establish where they were living at the time.  It is more than likely that Leeds is where they are buried.

ONLY purchase your certificate from GRO (General Register Office) - other sites will charge you a lot more.  Current charge is £9.25 per certificate.  You will need the reference - Emma died in June quarter 1906, Leeds Registration District, folio number 9b, page 364 and she was 35 years old.  Certificates are only despatched by post, but you can order on-line and pay by credit card.

Hope this helps.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks again Bumble B.
I have just had a look at the 1911 census and found my grandfather back using the BURLEY surname living with extended family (I had previously not found him as all the other children registered as RUDDOCK in 1911 even though wide spread) What's more interesting is that his name was written as RUDDOCK and rubbed out and written over as BURLEY but you can still see the correction.

But just to throw another spanner in the works their is another child listed with him, it looks like his parents could have had a 5th child in Otley in 1903 which is another huge surprise to me. The name is Nellie RUDDOCK which makes sense as they were living by that surname at the time, but now it opens another whole can of worms.

Just when I think I get my head around one problem up jumps another one.

Oh don't worry, this is only one of my great grandfathers I have been chasing the other one all over Victoria in Australia for several years. He seems to have run away from his family too although he had gold fever. Both are named Thomas and both have been giving me a hard time for so many years.

I have managed to go back on their lines and find their families, but of course they are the interesting ones because they have chosen a life of mystery or lived outside the family circle.

I have ordered that certificate so will wait patiently for it arrival. (Waiting, waiting - are we there yet?)

Yes I know why we all do it - it's the thrill of the chase - like a dog chasing cars - what will we do when we finally catch it?

Yes we already know - we help other people solve their problems, cos we can't help ourselves.

While I waited for my certificate to arrive I did some further research and found my Thomas Ruddock listed as Burley in the 1911 census. He was living with relatives and had a sister with him who I didn't know existed her name was Nellie - I believe her to be

Helen Hannah B Ruddock b 1903
I also found another child who only lived a year
Edward Ruddock b 1906 - d 1907

When Emma Blown (married name Ruddock) death cert arrived, the cause of death were all related to infections of child birth, she died in 1906 it would appear the same time as Edward was born.

So now I have another great aunt to add to the mix, I believe that she married Willie Armitage in 1919 and had 6 children. Perhaps this will give me some new information.

Cheers
