Scott Connection To Donegal
« on: Friday 20 April 12 14:31 BST (UK) »
I have traced my great grandfather Charles Scott born 1858 to Donegal.
He married in 1884 to Agnes Wilson in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire  and had 3 children - John & Agnes born 1885 and Joseph (my grandfather) born 1888. He died 1921 in Kilmarnock.
The Donegal connection was obtained from the 1901 Census as his place of birth.  He was not on any census prior to the 1891 and I assume came to Scotland between 1881 & 1884.  On his marriage certificate his father was Joseph Scott (Farmer) & mother was Ann (Scott) Scott who died prior to 1884.
There may also be a connection to Minnie Robertson of Inneskillen who died 1969/1970.  An uncle used to visit her & her niece with her husband (Ivor) visited Ardrossan.
I would be grateful for any advice & information.

I have visited PRONI and obtained a photocopy of the marriage certificate of Joseph Scott & Ann Scott dated 5 Nov 1852 at First Presbyterian Church Castlederg. The certificate indicates that the fathers were Charles Scott & Robert Scott both farmers.  Joseph Scott was resident at Grouse Lodge, Templecairne? Donegal(Templecarn?) and Ann Scott was resident at Erolareghey, Ardstraw? Co Tyrone.

Further information on Charles Scott and Joseph Scott would be greatly appreciated.

Both sides of my family are Ireland based - Boyd of Kingsbog, Ballylinney being the other.

Further update to previous information. More accurate?
Joeseph Scott - Grouse Lodge, Templecarne, Donegal.
Anne Scott - Coolcreaghy, Ardrstraw, Co Tyrone. Both addresses are from their marriage certificate as residence at time of marriage.

Griffiths Valuation for Coolcreaghy shows James, William junior & senior, John & George Scott  junior & senior all farming in Coolcreaghy in 1859.   The townland is on the modern Shanog and Coolcreaghy Roads, just a mile or so south of Castlederg. You can see the various properties on the Griffiths map.

There were 4 Scott farms in Coolcreaghy in the 1901 census (all Methodist):

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Clare/Coolcreaghy/

PRONI have 2 Scott wills for Coolcreaghy. Charles who died 1923 and Rebecca 1936.

I think Charles & Joseph Scott came from the townland of Grousehall, parish of Templecarn (not Grouse Lodge). Charles Scott is shown farming there in 1857 (plots 55 & 56). Grousehall is a few miles east of Lough Derg, and borders with Co Tyrone.Charles Scott died 25th March 1901 and his executor was Henry Scott. The will may be at PRONI.

There were 2 Scott farms there, beside each other, in 1901. One family Church of Ireland and the other Methodist.

I am confused over Grouse Lodge and Grousehall, Co Donegal.  My gg grandfather, Joseph Scott, resided at Grouse Lodge when he married in 1852. Are the names referring to the same place or not. Grousehall is shown on google maps but not Grouse Lodge. Trying to find out exactly where he came from.  My gg grandmother was Ann (Scott) Scott from Ardstraw and they married in Castlederg Presbyterian Church.
