Going to ask a silly question now (excuse my ignorance) but knowing these GRO references, what will that gain?

Thank you for that explanation.  I've always obtained mine by giving details of names, dates etc

The references quoted are from the GRO Index.  If you want to obtain the certificate from GRO, and you are sure of the connection, then it is easier to give them the reference.  However, if you go down the road of obtaining certificates from the Register Office, the GRO reference is of no use - each District has their own referencing system.

Question:  The GRO indexes only give the Quarter the death occurred in, but you need the exact date of death to order the death certificate...how do I get that information? 
(The one I am searching for is Frederick Lee, born 29 Dec 1857, and the Free BMD info for his death is July-Sept quarter 1944 vol. 3a page 1205)

Unless the GRO have changed there requirements, all you need is the year, the reg dist, the qtr,the vol no, and the page no, and of course the name
