Daphne Lyon
« on: Thursday 19 April 12 04:10 BST (UK) »
Daphne Lyon married John Henry Noon 22 Jan 1896 at St. Thomas, Heaton Norris, Lancs. Her father was James Lyon and his father was Thomas.
I would like to find out any information concerning Daphne Lyon. I have drawn a blank with most resources. I can't even find out her birth details although I believe she was born around 1870 and was single and aged 26 at the time of her marriage. He was a widower. They migrated to South Australia.

Hiya Ozeb
states born 1870 on familysearch - but doesn`t say where...
I went on advanced search and tried
England
Ireland
Isle of Man
Scotland
Wales
no luck at all......Frances D Lyon pops up frequently on the basic Familysearch in that Heaton Norris area ..do you think that Daphne may have been her given middle name ?? and Frances may have been her first name...if her mum was also called Frances, maybe they started using her middle name instead..
anyway...I have had a good 30 minute search and I can`t find her ..
www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb (a cheshire site ,in case she may have been born in cheshire - click on database and follow the search plan )
I have looked on lan-opc -no luck, but see if you can find a marriage for her dad James Lyon ....good luck...

Welcome to rootschat ozeb.  :)

I can't see any Daphne Lyons at all in the 1881 or 1891 census. There are several female Lyons born around the right time in Lancashire with a father James, but none are called Daphne.

Daphne would have been a fairly unusual name for someone born in 1870. I am wondering if she was christened with another first name?

Does your Daphne have a middle name? What was the occupation of her father James?

Just got the red notification and see that Allan has the same thoughts as me regarding Daphne's name.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I suspect she had a first name she didn't like. Doesn't make it easy but I appreciate your work guys.

Do you have her death certificate? Is she the one who died in SA 1927?

Are SA certs the same as NSW and show parents, children etc? Only as reliable as the informant of course :)

Yes.

Do both her marriage and death certificates show her father as James?

Does your Daphne have a middle name? What was the occupation of her father James?

If we know her father's occupation we may be able to locate a possible family group on the censuses.

I might have confused you. She died in SA in 1927 but I don't have any certificates. I'm doing this work for an 86 year old friend so I need to talk to him about how far he wants to go.

Ah, OK I see.  :) Due to the things you knew about Daphne, such as age and status, I thought you had her marriage certificate.

Well, is the father's name James, just what your friend has been told? You should probably buy at least the marriage certificate to double check the information, but having said that, fibs were told even on marriage certificates, and there is still no Daphne Lyons on the census. A difficult one ....

Does your friend know anything more about Daphne? At 86 I am wondering if he has suspicions or heard things about her that he would like to know more about. Family stories? Rumours?  :-\
