Hosfords - Snuff and Tobacconists in Cork City
« on: Wednesday 18 April 12 22:44 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the family of Joseph and Elizabeth Hosford of South Main Street, Cork.  Joseph died on 28th December 1813 and his wife died on 15 December 1822. They were Wesleyan.  Joseph was a freeman of Cork City.

Joseph was a snuff and tobacco merchant.  The first entry in the Cork directories for Joseph in South Main Street was in 1795 and the last was Jonathan Hosford in 1842. Joseph and Elizabeth had a daughter Jane who married Joseph Allen, a quaker (I know about them).  What other family did they have? Was Jonathan the son of Joseph?  Are you descended from this family and can you help.

Do you know where the Methodists of South Main Street would have been buried as that might provide a clue.  What happened to Jonathan after 1842.  Have the methodist records survived and if so, from what period and where can they be viewed.

I think Methodist records can be included in the registers of other protestant denominations - e.g. Church of Ireland.

Slater's 1846 includes a slightly later listing :

Johnthn. Hosford , tobacco manufacturer, 3 South Main st., Cork

there's also a grocer named Margaret Hosford listed as 58 Shandon st.

There's a possibly connected marriage (maybe a son of Joseph?) in the extracted records on FamilySearch :

Joseph Frederick Hosford, 21 Apr 1859, St. Anne Shandon, Cork

there are also marriages for a few possible children  of Johnathon - see : Hosford marriages

Hi Shane,
Many thanks for this.  I should have thought to look at familysearch.org.  As you say, Joseph Frederick Hosford certainly looks promising as do the marriages you refer to.  I will investigate these.
Many thanks again
