Townyglass or Ballyglass ? Completed. Thank you

Hi,

Is anyone able to inform me as to wether or not there is a place named Townyglass in Swinford. Mayo please ?
Or is Townyglass a derivative of Ballyglass. ?

I am researching my Duffy ancestors and they maintained a family bible which states that place of birth is Townyglass.

I cannot seem to be able to find the location of this place in references and maps etc..
I would truly appreciate any further insight.

there are a number of townlands named Ballyglass or similar in Co. Mayo (about 12) and also a townland named Tawnaglass. It consists of about 200 acres and is in the civil parish of Kilconduff, near Swinford.

The placename database at www.logainm.ie  shows several variations in spelling over the years for Tawnaglass, including : North Townaglass, Tavnygloss, Tavneyglass, Tavanaughglass, Tawnaglass and Tawnyglass

all seemingly derived from the Irish 'Tamhna glaise' = green field or field of the streamlet'.

Wow-its amazing to see how many variations of the name that there is-I cannot thank you both enough.

Tawnaglass is possibly the correct name and the Irish family-Duffys that came to reside in England seem to have anglicised it-Townyglass-should that be the correct one.
I shall definately chase up the info that you have supplied and let you know how I get on.

I am currently reading up on the history/geography/etc on Tawnaglass__ are you able to tell me which diocese Tawnaglass comes under please ?

It's usually the name of the parish you need for further research rather than the diocese. What denomination were your Conway family ?

The RC parish for Tawnaglass townland is Swinford, which is sometimes listed as "Kilconduff & Meelick" - since it includes these civil parishes. The RC Diocese is Achonry.

The Church of Ireland parish is Kilconduff, and the CofI Diocese at that time was also named Achonry. It's now part of a united Diocese named 'Tuam, Killala & Achonry'

Thank you very much for the information in regards to the Diocese of Tawnaglass------most helpful.
My Duffys were/are RC.  Duffys-? yes I put in the wrong name, sorry about that, my Conways were from Aghamore, Mayo Ireland.
Just going to chase up more on the info that you have kindly supplied.
