1841 and 1851 Census Lookup Maidstone BAKER
« on: Wednesday 18 May 05 20:16 BST (UK) »
I am desperate for a lookup of the following family in the 1841 and 1851 census records of Maidstone, Kent on Scrubbs Lane:

Thomas George BAKER and family in Maidstone, Kent.

Thomas (b c1818) and wife, Mary Matilda (B c1818)  had, at least the following children:
1. Mary Matilda b c1842
2. Susannah b c1856
3. Horace b c1861

I believe they would've been living on SCRUBBS LANE in MAIDSTONE, as they were in 1861, 1871, and 1881.

I have already found them in the 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 census records.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 1841 census should show:
BAKER, Thomas G. abt. 23, wife Mary M. abt. 22. There may have been children.

The 1851 cesus should show:
BAKER, Thomas G. abt. 33, wife Mary M. abt 32, dau Mary M. abt. 9. There may have been other children.

Hi epo,
This may be your Thomas in 1851:
ref HO107 1617a folio 231: Somerfield Toll gate, London Road
Thomas George Baker head mar age 32 labourer born Maidstone
Mary M do wife mar age 32 toll collector born do
Thomas do son age ?? (possibly 4) born do
Alfred L do son age ?? (possibly 2) born do
Not christened dau age under 1 month born do

(The ages of Thomas and Alfred are both single digits but not at all clear)
Names and ages of parents tally, but no sign of daughter Mary.
(Scrubbs Lane is only two pages further on, there are no Baker families living there)
xx Carol.

Hi epo,
I've been through the whole of the London Road/Scrubbs Lane area on the 1841, but can't spot Thomas and Mary. I was wondering if they were married by 1841 ? If newly weds, they could have been living with either sets of parents. Sorry I can't help anymore.

That's ok. I appreciate the effort. I think the assumption of them being newlyweds and perhaps w/parents is correct. They were married on 16 Jun 1839 in Teston, Kent.  In that regard, I only know Thomas George's father was a George Baker and Mary Matilda's parents were a Thomas William and Mary Ann Hills. Thanks again, I really appreciate the time and effort.

It's so difficult with a name like BAKER in Kent but I do wonder if this could be a possibility for Mary and her mother ???

1841

London Road, Maidstone

Mary HILLS 60 b.Kent
Ann 29 straw bonnet m. b.Kent
Thomas 27 basket maker b.Kent
Robert 3 b.Kent
/
Mary BAKER 22 b.Kent
Mary 8m b.Kent
(very faint) possibly Catherine? BURR.......? 12 b.Kent

HO107/490/11 folio 52 page 19

Yes, thank you. That's them, I just can't figure out where Mary Hills Baker's husband Thomas is. ??? I know they were married then(certificate), and stayed as such until they died.

Yes, I think it will be almost impossible to identify him in 1841 as he is away from the family - perhaps he was at work ???
