Adoption and "orphanage"?

Hi everyone

I get the feeling that alot of records for this topic is very restricted but I was wondering what could be accessed and how to access records? I am doing genealogy for my boyfriends family but they want to know what happened to someones wife in the family (his grandmothers brother).

Apparently, according to the marriage certificate, she has no father and his family have said that she spend her life between foster homes. Looking at birth records around 1932, it doesnt look like she was born Anita Mary James.

Could you explain what the rules are and what the next step is to find out about her?

First of all, can you confirm that she has passed away? As we have a 'no living people' policy here when did she pass away?

And what part of the country are we talking about?

i cant fully confirm, but there have been many rumours that she did. She may have remarried in scotland. Other rumours were said she went to scotland but if not there, cambridge or hull. I believe she was born in cambridge

A couple of possibilities re birth:

September qtr 1933
Newmarket district    vol 3b, page 603
Ager, Anita M      Mother's maiden name: Fogg

But a better possibility:
December qtr 1932
Peterborough district    vol 3b, page 252
Graham, Anita     Mother's maiden name: Graham

Adoption records are not online!

A birth where the surname is the same as the mother's maiden name COULD be an illegitimate birth?
And therefore more likely to be put up for adoption.

The only way of finding out if they were adopted is to buy a copy of the birth certificates. Birth entries for adopted children are annotated to show this.

There isn't an entry in the GRO adopted childrens index for Anita Mary James 1927-1946 or 1947-1951.
