Impedimentum - Irish Catholic marriage record - COMPLETED with thanks
« on: Monday 16 April 12 20:14 BST (UK) »
Hi,

In an Irish Catholic marriage record for an Ancestor I'm researching the attached entry is in the column headed 'Impedimentum' could anyone decipher it and help me understand what it actually means.

Thanks,

Hello -

It looks like the Latin word for 'none'.

Yes, it looks like nullum, which is some tense (don't know which) of nullus, not any.

There is no impediment to the marriage. If there were an impediment you would have to apply for a dispensation. An impediment may be caused by some sort of relationship, already existing, for instance, a blood relationship. You are not allowed to marry your godfather because that is a spiritual relationship. Also if one party to the marriage were not Catholic a dispensation might be needed. claytonbradley
