Pipe of Ipswich
« on: Monday 16 April 12 10:08 BST (UK) »
Beginner...

A Pipe owned a department store in Ipswich in the 1930s. He had a daughter, Penelope Ann (my MIL, died 1995 in Richmond) by a woman who subsequently disappeared. as far as I know he then remarried and had a son David, still living.

Any pointers to info about Pipe and his first wife much appreciated.

John Clifford Pipe was born 1890 Lowestoft, died June quarter 1968 Samford Registration District, Suffolk.

He married first as stated by suzard.

He then married a Sheila F. Gwynne-Furley Dec.qtr.1934 London City and the son you mention then born 1935 in Samford Regn. District, Suffolk.

John died in Jun.qtr.1968 Samford.

As to the department store in Ipswich - I'm a local and have never heard of it I'm afraid.   We didn't have many department stores at the time you are interested in - perhaps he had invested and was a director or something of one of them.

His father Edgar was a Bank Manager and John's initial occupation was in a bank also.

Vida, as stated by suzard, remarried in Westminster 1935.

In March quarter 1936 Westminster a daughter was born to a Turner (mmn Hammond) so Vida may have had another child as well.   I cannot see a marriage or death entry for said person so they may still be living.

Wow, so quick  8-)

Many thanks Suz, Charlotte, Annette. After Vida took off there was no contact between her and Penny, and there was quite a rift between Penny and Penny's step-relations, so she felt rather isolated. She made several attempts to trace Vida but before the internet it was too difficult. At least her children now have some answers.

So thanks again, very much appreciated

Oh, and it seems that John Clifford Pipe's shop in Ipswich was called Limmer and Pipe, and he lived in Elton Park House. Vida was also known as Gunkha
