Have you considered this birth ?

June qtr 1839
Sampson Clayton  Stockport  19 229

Rosie

I think you really need this birth certificate, if only to eliminate.

Sampson mother maiden name was: Ashton according to CheshireBMD  it looks like Amy died in 1841 aged 32 as "Amy Ashton", so a marriage may not have happened or had been annulled.

;D Thanks so much folks!! Will look into these leads and get some certificates. Finally unlocked this family mystery hopefully! Grandma and I have been puzzling over this one for a long time and I'm sure she will be happy if it all turns out true.
Best wishes to all!
Aaron

Great news for those who are either related through the Clayton family or descendents of Sampson Ashton!
I have received the Birth Cert of Sampson Ashton and the Death Cert of Amy Ashton. I'd like to share this new discovery and potentially finalize this post.

Sampson Ashton was born 1 Feb 1839 in New Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport. His parents are Sampson Clayton (a block printer) & Amy Ann Clayton (nee Ashton). As for their marriage I cannot seem to find this anywhere if anyone can help. However, this brings us to the next certificate of his mother Amy.

Amy Ann Ashton, wife of William Ashton (a painter) died of Consumption at age 32 on 17 Aug 1841 at Wellington Road South, Stockport First. Buried Cheadle Edgeley (Methodist) on 20 August 1841. The Methodist/Wesleyan Chapel on Edgeley Road Stockport is now a Buddhist meditation centre, no sign of any gravestones. Very mysterious!

Close calls & mishaps:
1) William (gardener) & Amy Ashton are in 1841 Census of Hunt Croft, Werneth, Hyde near Stockport.
However their ages differ greatly: William, 54 and Amy 50 (!?)
2) Amy Ashton (Visitor) in 1861 census of Heaton Norris, Stockport age 70, birth in Hyde.
3) Amy Ashton Buried 22 Feb 1877 at St. George, Hyde, Cheshire, Age 85 (born 1792) &
4) Amy Ashton Buried 26 Nov 1878 at St. George, Hyde, Cheshire, Age 81 (born 1797)
5) Amy Ann Ashton Married John Wild on 17 Jun 1849 at ? Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire.
6) Amy Shawcross(single) & Thomas Ashton's (Intended) Marriage on 11 Sep 1809 at St Marys,
    Cheadle, Stockport
7) Emy Mottram's Marriage to Thomas Ashton 19 Oct 1818 in Stockport, Cheshire (...)

The Amy Ashton death in 1841 is the better match to Sampson's Granny than his mother.
You are the only one who can see the figures on that; is it clearly and absolutely a 3 and not a 5?

ho107/ 113  bk 13 fol 13 page 28 (low on lhs)

Amy Ashton   30
Sumson Ashton   2

HO107/114; Bk6; F 5; P3
William Ashton   54
Amy Ashton   50

Hi

Have you checked the Amy Ashton burial records at St George Hyde? If not, I will go and check them next week. The archives centre is closed on Bank Holiday Monday.
