France-ODM Lookup
« on: Sunday 15 April 12 17:43 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I just found a record on FamilySearch which I would like to investigate further. I was wondering if anyone could look at the France-ODM records for

Source Film Number:    723936
Indexing Project (Batch) Number:    C83597-3
"France, Births and Baptisms, 1546-1896,"
Name:    Anne Marie Pfister
Gender:    Female
Birth Date:    08 Dec 1820
Birthplace:    Beblenheim, Haut-Rhin, France
Father's Name:    Jean Pfister
Mother's Name:    Anne Marie Frey

I need to check if the surname on that record is really Pfister as Pfisterer is often mispelt. Also, is there any other information on there please or this girls father Jean? Is there a hand written document I can view to check if it hasnt been mistranscribed? What was the birth date and place of mother and father?

Thank you

PS. can anyone teach me how to use the France-ODM please?

Not sure what you mean by ODM.

If you mean BMD (or in France, NMD), it is basically the same as the other sites I've linked you to, only now the department is "Haut Rhin", so we need to look for those archives, luckily they are also online: http://www.archives.cg68.fr/Services_Actes_Civils.aspx

Again, the "tables decennales" are the indexes, covering ten years at once for one place.
There is also normally a yearly index at the end of each set of records.

In this case the original definitely says "Pfister".  Father is Jean, aged 36 (this couple appear to have married in the same town in 1809, as far as I can tell - handwriting is a bit dense).

It's probably one of their indexing projects, then in which case it may just be people indexing from microfilm. There is no national database for bmd records for France, only online archives for some departments and sometimes municipal archives for individual cities, and a few localised databases created by regional family history societies. Quite a lot isn't online.

"723936" in the record you quote is the film number. Back in the good old days before all this stuff came online, one of the main ways of doing research in France at a distance would be to go to an LDS family history center, order a reel of microfilm, wait the four to six weeks for it to arrive, and then look at it on a microfilm reader-- only to probably find out that you needed to order a different film.  ;D

By the way, I have found a way to get records from switzerland I think. Particularly the french speaking part of switzerland (where i am 100% sure one of my relatives is from), Neuchâtel

http://www.ne.ch/neat/site/jsp/rubrique/rubrique.jsp?StyleType=bleu&DocId=11450

I have emailed them to ask them for details. Did i get it right?
