Cahill Family of Ireland
« on: Sunday 15 April 12 17:03 BST (UK) »
Hi from Canada

I am trying to trace my Cahill family and am not sure where to look.  My grandfather was Laurence Frank Cahill born in Quetta, West Bengal, India in 1893.  His parents were Michael Cahill and Annie Louise Pannell.  He was employed from 1908 - 1920 by Cannock & Com.  in Limerick, Ireland.  He arrived in St. John, New Brunswick in 1921.  He listed on his immigration papers that his father was Major Michael Cahill living at Loomdula Cottage in Askeaton, Limerick Co.  I found on Ancestry.ca a listing for a Michael Cahill 22 Dec 1901 Warrant Office, Ordnance Dept. Northern Army, Fort William, Quetta, India  I believe this is my great-grandfather.  My grandfather married Beatrice Kay in Montreal, Quebec in 1923 and had a daughter in 1927.  He died the next year in 1928 in Montreal of TB. His brother Stanislaus(Stanley) John Cahill was born 1899 in Dundur, Jammu and Kashmir, India.  He came to Canada in 1920 and was living in Quebec. He married in 1923 and died in 1924 from TB.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi CanadaPrairiegirl

I am pretty new to this game but as I have interests in Canada I took some interest in your post.

It seems to me that you might try to narrow down your search somehow. I put your name into BMD and the search ' found 14078 matches and the maximum number that can be displayed is 3000'.

Perhaps you do not know of this

very much a case of 'seek and thee shall find'[ I am afraid:)

I wonder if a more Irish or Canadian orientated site might come up with something more helpful. If you find either please would you let us know?

Not sure what "BMD" site you tried. There are lots of great links in Useful Links board but not sure why you've highlighted that particular section  :-\

CanadaPrairiegirl- do you want to trace the Cahill family in Ireland? if so I can move this thread to an Irish board for you.
You've got lots of fantastic details to start with and it makes it easier to help you since you've given us so much information.
Having an Indian birthplace makes Laurence Cahill much easier to find in Irish records. Here's Laurence in 1911 census- draper's apprentice living in a boarding house:

Brother Stanislaus in 1911 census- a pupil in Tipperary:

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I thought that I saw some titles of newspapers listed that seemed to me as potential places to do a name search.

Free BMD - "births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales"
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Since the poster has so much detail to start with there's really no point in just searching for Cahills, or even Cahills in Limerick, etc.

Added- Stanislaus John Cahill born 13 Nov.1898

Wow!!!   I was not sure where to go to look for information and ancestry.ca didn't seem to have much.

aghadowey if you  could you please move my posting/thread to the Irish board that would be great appreciated.

I think the information everyone has passed on to me seems to be bang on.  I hadn't been able to find Stanley's birth info.,  so thank you so much for that.

I will follow up on everyones suggestions.  Thanks again.   :)

Do you already have his brother Patrick Archibald in this list? born 1895 in Dum Dum, same place as Stanislaus.

Thanks for the info.  I did find the birth and death information for Patrick Cahill.  He passed away at the age of one.

I haven't been able to find any record of Laurence Cahill's father's birth so I am not sure if he was born in Ireland or India.  Also not sure if his mother's maiden name is Pannell or Parnell.  She was mentioned in the marriage information for my grandparents and was deceased at this time 1923.

I have a copy of a will for a Hanoria/Honora Cahill as she left some money to my mother back in 1944/45.  My mother had never been told anything about her biological father until this time.  I am not sure how Hanoria Cahill is contacted to my family tree. I found  information on Ancestry.ca about her marriage to a Michael Cahill.  Her maiden name is Hierlihy.  In her will she stated that she was leaving the commission of her late husband Major Cahill to his nephew so I am assuming he was in the British Army.

Any assist would be great appreciated.
Thanks.
