Thank you all for your advice and thoughts. Pels was right that the men in this picture are working class. I think the one nearest the left rear wheel was one of my grandmother's older brothers. If so he came from Northampton and worked in a shoe factory (they all worked in the shoe trade). A day out seems to make sense, we had a racecourse in Northampton, but racing ceased in about 1904 so I think that is a bit early for this picture, Towcester Racecourse is not far away but racing didn't start there until 1928 so that is too late. There must have been lots of possibilities for a lad's day out.
