OK Doug....William who married Brigit O`Meally has a Pedigree Resource File on www.familysearch.org
you say Elizabeth O`Meally - the official bishops transcript states BRIGIT ...
the 1841 census gave a leeway of 5 years - so William was born 1836 according to the Pedigree file...father Richard...so at least we know his year of birth and his dads name...let me see if I can find a marriage for a Richard Hookway in Bideford circa 1830 ish

Who is given as the father on the marriage certificate in Australia?

Who are stated to be his parents on his death certificate in Australia?

Is there any further information on the passenger lists etc on entering Australia?

hi allen again,
i don;t have a copy of his marriage cert but on his death cert it says that his father was richard and mothers name is on it, according to my wifes father william and his brother came out on the same boat to melbourne in the 1850s which i can't find any more details on the boat. i have received family trees from various people and the are split on who williams parents are -william and elizabeth according to the lds site or richard and no mothers  name  .

There's a William Hookway sailing from Melbourne to Sydney on the "Wonga Wonga" arriving 15 Nov 1866. Certainly easier to get to Yass from Sydney than Melbourne.

No sign of any other Hookways on the ship though.

Hookway seems to be quite a common name in Bideford. A William Hookway, wife Ann and ten children (including another William) arrived at New York on a direct sailing from there in 1837.

There are also at least two seamen, James & John Hookway, born Bideford c1840, listed several times as crew on ships arriving at Australian ports.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
