HARDY family to New York 1890 - 1893 (COMPLETED)

Hello All,

The Hardy family (and 12 pieces of luggage) arrived at New York onboard the Etruria on 1st December 1890.  Now I know this family must have returned to the UK before the fourth quarter of 1893 when their fifth of six children was born back in the UK.  So I am wondering what they did in the intervening years whilst in the US

William Hardy (about 1858 - 1901) was a Signalman, and I don't know where (probably in England) he was born, or anything about his parents.  His wife Caroline Hannah Sanderson/Hardy (about 1858 Bedworth Warwickshire England - 1923 Lanchester Durham England).  And their children Stanley C Hardy, Hilda Gordon Hardy, Charles Sanderson Hardy, William Norman Hardy.

I wonder if anyone can assist me in locating them in the US during those years, so I may ascertain what made them return home.  I don't even know if they went elsewhere in the US or maybe stayed around New York.

Hello Paul

Your post on the Hardy family was absolutely fascinating!  I have been researching William and Caroline Hardy for several months and hit a brick wall when I couldn’t find any details about William Hardy’s death.  I was left with the possibility that his death wasn’t recorded in the UK because he might have died in another country.  I was unaware that the family had emigrated to the USA in 1890.  I wonder if Caroline Hardy and children returned to the UK alone because on the birth certificate of the fifth child you refer to, William Hardy is given as the father but as deceased.  This child was born in August 1893 and her birth registered in October of the same year in Lanchester, Co Durham.  It would appear from this information that William Hardy had died sometime between December 1892 and October 1893.  I now wonder if he died in the USA.  This would account for my inability to locate his death details in the UK. 

William Hardy’s birth was registered in Houghton-le-Spring, Co Durham during the final quarter of 1857.  He was born in Hetton, Co Durham to Ann Hardy.  On his marriage certificate he doesn’t record any details of his father.  His maternal grandmother was Margaret Foster (circa 1809-1884), his maternal grandfather was William Hardy (circa 1785 – 1850) and great-grandfather was John Hardy, born circa 1761. 

Any further information you uncover about the Hardy family would be very much appreciated!

Yes, that appears to be the correct family on the UK 1901 Census, though Bedworth is in Warwickshire; also Mary A on the 1901 Census changes to Marian on the 1911 Census!

So in OND 1893 5th child Winifred Caroline Hardy B West Kyo Durham; also in AMJ 1897 6th child Gertrude Kathleen Hardy B West Kyo Durham.

So if the 5th child's father is listed as deceased on her B Cert - who is the father of the 6th child Do you have that B Cert ?

Drats - I've literally just ordered the M Cert of William Hardy/Caroline Hannah Sanderson just last night, hoping to find his father's details!

As William was born in 1857/8 and did not marry Miss Sanderson until 1884 - meaning he was 26 years old then.  I tried to find him as a single man in the 1881 Census - but the closest I could find was a William Hardy head/married 23 Signal-man (Railway) B Hetton Durham living at Cowpen Northumberland without his family. I believe this man's wife and child are at 1 Dock Street Cowpen with the Turner family - wife Margaret Turner/Hardy 21 B Seaton Sluice Northumberland and child of 4months Ann B Cowpen Northumberland.  So are there any Turner's in your research?

Yes, I do have the birth certificate of Caroline's sixth child - Gertrude Kathleen - but the father is not named. 

I believe the William Hardy located on the 1881 census in Cowpen is our William Hardy.  On the certificate of his marriage to Caroline in 1884, his status is given as widower.  I have no information re his first wife or her family.

Am interested in finding details of his death, possibly in USA?

Ok on the above.  Yes it seems that our William Hardy (Signalman) died before his 5th child was born in August 1893 back in the UK, and maybe he did die in the USA, so we need some kind soul to search back one year from the above date for his possible death.

Gertrude Kathleen Hardy married a Isaac Bell in Lanchester Durham AMJ 1919, so my searches reveal; maybe her father's name is listed on her M Cert ?  My guess is her father is the John Kendray, boarder, mentioned as living with her Mother on the 1901 and 1911 Census.

My interest in this Hardy line stems from an old story that my family are related to the Captain Thomas Masterman Hardy of "kiss me Hardy" fame.  I am linked through William Norman Hardy who married Catherine Jane Irwin - the Irwins are on my Mother's maternal side.

I have a bit more researching to do, but we will see what happens here on this forum ...

Maybe this could be the death of William?  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JD1T-9ZS  It would fit with the time that Caroline would have been pregnant.

I think we've hit the jackpot!  This link would appear to refer to the William Hardy we're looking for, with a slight change in his occupation.  How easy would it be to find out the cause of his death? 

My interest in the family is that William and Caroline are my great-grandparents and the baby that she was pregnant with on the return voyage from USA to UK is my grandmother, Winifred Caroline.
