Harold Phillip Sydney Ayres Purdie was my father, [by adoption], he supposedly had three wives.

1. Winifred Elizabeth Gough 1902-1927 Would like to know if there were children.

2. Ivy Reeves - Married 1929 Once again - Any children. Did she die???

3. Hilda Beatrice Gardner b; circa 1910 1915 in Kent England, died 1985 Cairns North Queensland Australia.

Harold's Death Certificate states that he and Hilda married in a place called Bellam England. Never heard of the place. They arrived in Sydney Australia  aboard the "Aorangi", in 1938.I've always wondered why he never went to war.

Desmond, his brother married a Margaret Winifred Johnson. Do not know if there were any children.

Harold was an Electrical Engineer, Desmond a Chemist.

***Please excuse mistake, Hilda's Surname is Gardiner not Gardner.*** They supposedly married 1937.

After 1912 the mothers maiden name was used on all births,so that will narrow things down for you.

Will indexes up to 1941 are on Ancestry under the National Probate Calendar.

You would need to contact the National Probate Registry at York to get a copy of the actual will,costs £6.

Harold Ayres Purdie and Ivy Purdie appear on the London electoral rolls from 1932- 1939 at 114 Alderney Street SW1

In 1926 and 27 he is at 119 St Thomas's Road Islington on his own.

His first wife Winifred died really young.

Hi Jennifer,

I stumbled across this post while doing some research on my family tree and have found some of your research very helpful - thanks! I thought you may be interested to know about Percy Wilfred Purdie who was my great grandfather.  Percy was a chemist and married Florence Jessie Price.  As far as I am aware they had no children.  In the 1901 Census they were living together but then sometime after  Percy ran off with Florence's younger sister May Adelaide Price and moved to Australia.  We think they arrived in 1905 but as yet I have not found any official records of their marriage.  My grandmother Maisie Ena Purdie was born in Australia in 1911.  Her birth certificate indicates her parents marriage was in 1905 but this is probably what they were able to tell the registry officer.  The story my grandmother always heard was that they eloped which is very romantic (but she didn't know of his previous marriage).

I would love to know of any descendants who may know something of the story of their elopement.

Last time I can find Percy on the electoral roll was 1902.

Electoral Rolls-

1927 Harold was at 119 St.Thomas Road Highbury at 117 was a Leonard Adolph & Lizzie Gough

1932-1939 he is listed at 114 Alderney Street SW1 Westminster with Ivy

1937 & 1938 at the same time he is listed at 58 Cheriton Square Balham with Hilda Gardiner at the same address.

So did he live a double life for two years or did Ivy keep putting him down hoping he would return?

Winifred Gough married Sept qtr 1924 Hackney died Dec qtr 1927 London City aged 25 born c. 1902

Married Ivy Reeves Mar qtr 1929 Islington. Possible on census born 1893?

Possible family for Hilda?
William James Gardiner & Ada nee Lee born Kent
Children Walter 1895, Maud 1897, Ada 1899 Dorothy 1901, Beatrice 1903 Hilda 1906 Gravesend Kent?

Could marriage be Balham & not Bellam? Have not actually found a marriage!
