Both parents will be on birth certifcates (unless illegitimate)
Fathers only will be on marriage certificates in England, but both parents will be named on Scottish marriage certs.

Did you get Sarah's surname from the birth certificate of one of her and William's children?

Depending on when William was born in 1871, he may appear in the 1871 census with his parents and siblings. Or he may appear in 1881 as a 10 year old. The 1881 census is free to search. Same for Sarah. Obviously the first port of call for her would be Northumberland as she says she was born there. If her family originate there, you might be in luck as there are excellent early records kept for the county, and lots of them are online.

You are dealing with very common names so will need to ensure you are following the correct families.

Trying to find them before 1901 is difficult!!  I came forward to 1911 to see if I could identify the family, but it looks as if James and Henry are in an institution by themselves (?workhouse ?hospital).

Will keep looking
