Pavey family in Dorset
« on: Wednesday 11 April 12 23:37 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone - looking for any connections with the Pavey family in Dorset. I have at least three Pavey lines in my family as a Pavey has married another Pavey on at least two seperate occasions. Very confusing when half the men seem to be named Charles, John or William  ???

One set of ancestors appear to have begun in the Thorncombe area and I have a John Pavey marrying an Elizabeth Pavey in Thorncombe in 1795. Their Great Grandaughter, Amelia Pavey, married a Charles Lanning Pavey in Weymouth in 1893

The families have all migrated towards Weymouth with the Industrial revolution, stopping at Bridport, Abbotsbury and Portesham along the way.

Hi there,

My great, great, great grandfather, Richard Cox married a Matilda Pavey in 1846.
She had a baby before they were married who is registered as illegitimate in the OPC baptism register.
He went by Richard Cox Pavey.
Matilda's father was Charles Pavey. (Obviously not Charles Lanning Pavey as this was way before 1893)

I'm still researching it. Do you think there might be a connection?

There certainly is a connection ... Matilda was the sister of my 3x Great Grandfather Silvester Masters Pavey. Matilda and Richard Cox snr did get married and had more children, who are all in my tree. If you ever read any of Thomas Hardy's books you can learn some strange old Dorset customs, one of which is that rural folk in Dorset were encouraged to have sex before marriage and if the girl became pregnant then she was a good choice for a wife. So there are quite a few of my Dorset ancestors who were illegitimate first born 8)

So do you think that Richard Cox Pavey was actually Richard Cox's son? I'm totally going to read some Tom Hardy books.
That's so interesting!
Richard's and Matilda's son Alfred (Baptised 23 Mar 1858 - St. Mary's Malcombe Regis);  is where my line comes in.
He married Elizabeth Rhoades (I can't find their marriage record. I know that her family were from Brighton)  and they had a son called John
John had a son called Peter John. (I can't find this baptism record)
They moved to South Africa.
Peter John's oldest son is also Peter John.
Peter John Jr had 5 children, his youngest is ME!  :)

Would you be able to send me the information you have on Matilda and Richard's family?

That would be awesome!

Also... Hi there distant cousin! hehehe  ;D

Another distant cousin comes to light  8) You're correct, Richard Cox was the father of Richard Cox Pavey, although his name isn't mentioned in the baptism pages from the Dorset Parish Records. I have a record of Alfred attending the Charity School in Litton Cheney, near Abbotsbury when he was 13. Matilda's father was Charles Pavey, (born Bridport 1796) who married Jane Masters (born abt 1797 in Dorset). Their wedding was 12 August 1813 in Bridport, Dorset. That's as far back as I have been able to get with this line as there literally 100s of Charles Pavey's in Dorset/Somerset/Devon at the end of the 18th century. So far I have discovered 7 Children to Richard and Matilda - Richard, Millie, Matilda, Ann, John, Charles and Alfred. So do you live in South Africa now? I'm in the Lake District of England, although my father did live in Dorset for many years after WW2.

Yup.
In Johannesburg born and raised.
My sister lives in the UK now though so I do visit often and have actually been to the church where Alfred Cox's wife, Elizabeth Rhoade's parents were married.
I just wish I'd known at the time.

Do you have any birth/baptism records for the 7 children?
I'm especially interested in Matilda and Anne as I can't find them.
I have found the rest from the Dorset OPC:

Their children:
•   Richard Pavey,
baptised 8 Jan 1845; Richard Cox PAVEY (illegitimate) son of Matilda Pavey (ST MARY'S)
•   Milbro,
baptised 26 May 1847;
Milbro COX; son of Richard & Matilda Cox (Sail Maker) (ST MARY'S)
•   Matilda,1849?
•   Ann, 1851?
•   John (Master Mariner,went to New Zealand),
Baptised 14 Nov 1851;
 John COX son of Richard & Matilda Cox (Sail Maker) (Abode - Weymouth) (ST MARY'S)
•   Charles
Baptised 28 May 1856;
Charles COX son of Richard & Matilda Cox (Sail Maker)  (ST MARY'S)
•   Alfred(Master Mariner).
Baptised 23 Mar 1858;
Alfred COX son of Richard & Matilda Cox (Sail Maker) (ST MARY'S)

Do you have the actual Census record of Alfie at the Charity School? I did see that he was listed there but I haven't commited to paying any site to get the record as I don't know which one is best.

Any advice?

Ann and Matilda were both baptised on the same day - July 12th 1850, Melcombe Regis, (which is really the seaside town of modern day Weymouth). There's a note in the parish register to say that Matilda was born on Oct 20th 1848. Matilda's name was mis-transcribed as Martha which doesn't help, although it clearly says Matilda in the book.
