Henry Harmsworth (1852) - Brimpton
« on: Wednesday 11 April 12 12:57 BST (UK) »
Henry was born 1852 in Brimpton. I have been told he married Mary Ann Wickens on 23 April 1871 at St Peter, Brimpton. Unfortunately I cannot find Henry in 1861 census. So at the moment I do not know the parents of Henry. I have other links to some Harmsworths from Brimpton so I'm trying to work out if Henry is linked to this other branch.

I have more details of children of Henry & his burial etc if needed.

What was his father's name on his marriage certificate?

Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the marriage certificate, I have only been told about the date & place of marriage but it is consistent with marriage in GRO index.

There is a tree on Ancestry, but that also has no details of Henry's parentage - nor the 1861 census!

To solve this problem, you are going to have to buy either (or both!) the birth certificate or marriage certificate.

Hi there

I think I have found your Henry on the 1861 census, unfortunately, he
is in the workhouse and not with any parents.
He is 8 years old and named as Henry Armsworth.  It does state he
was born in Wilnslow, Hampshire and at first I thought it
cannot be him.  When I looked at the genuki for Brimpton, it
states that villages in Hampshire are only 2.6 miles away.
As he was only a child, and could well have lost his parents,
he may have been living in Wilnslow when he went into the workhouse
and presumed he was born there.  I did then see him at 18 on the 1871
back in Brimpton so he did find his way home.  Maybe, some of his family
came and got him out of the workhouse?
Alot of ifs, but I cannot find him on the 1861 unless his surname has
been changed drastically.
Presumably his Dad might have a connection with one of the childrens
names so I will try and see if I can have a look through the records to
see if there are people with the kids names getting married about
Henrys birth time.
If not I think you will have to do what KGarrad said and buy the birth
certificate as that will give the Mother and her maiden name, or usually does.

Have you got him in 1871?  He is boarding with the Wickens family including future wife Mary Ann.

There are other Armsworths on the 1861 entry found, Joseph 46 father? and Martha 12 sister?

Oh might not be your man.  There is a birth Winslade Hants for a Henry Harmsworth 1852 with father Abraham mother Rhoda.  Martha born 1849 also belongs to that couple.

Brimpton was in the Newbury Union, and he would have gone to the Poorhouse there, and not across the county border?
