Hope somebody can help
« on: Wednesday 11 April 12 12:35 BST (UK) »
Long story..

My father john Bradley died in approx 1970 when I was just 5 yrs old, throughout my life I was told little about him and what I was told were lies ( don't know why). I was told he was an only child from ashby and had no relatives, however this has been disproven and I have found a living sibling of his in Newcastle upon Tyne.

So now I'm trying to find my past blind so to speak.. This is what I know so far

John Bradley, born 1921 mothers maiden name Seed, birth registered in Chester le Street.

Dad was the oldest of three brothers *

Grandfather had a sister Emily who married my Grandmothers brother.
my Grandfather John William Bradley, was born in 1899 at Lanchester, County Durham, which is just up the road from Chester le Street.

My Grandmother Margaret Ellen Bradley (nee Seed) born 1902, has her birth registered in Chester le Street.

This is all I can find out, can somebody point me in the right direction please, many thanks in advance

Hi Chloe, and welcome to Rootschat  :D

I'm sure we can help you to find some information about your father.  Was it about his life that you wanted to find out, or about his ancestry?  The latter may be easier than the former!

As you know your father's parents' names, you should be able to find them on the census returns for 1901 (your grandfather) and 1911 (your grandmother) - the earliest ones they will be on.  That will give you (hopefully) their parents' names.
You could also look for the marriage of your grandparents, which will give only fathers' names unfortunately.
Once you have the parents' names you can continue to trace back through the birth and marriage records and the census.

Let me know if I'm on the right track with what you're after  ;)

Cheers
Prue

(P.S.  I had to remove the names of your father's brothers, as you said they are still living - Rootschat policy).

Hi Chloe, welcome to Rootschat!

Prue has given you some really good pointers.  It is really important that you back up any discoveries with evidence such as birth or marriage certificates.

www.freebmd.org.uk will help you look up reference numbers for ordering certificates from the GRO.  For example, in 1921:

Mar quarter (so married in Jan, Feb or March) 1921
John W Bradley married Margaret E Seed in Chester-le-s. (this is the registration district), volume 10a, page 1240
This reference can be used for ordering certs from https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp (at a cost of £9.25, which is a lot, but sometimes it is the only way to get conclusive proof)

As for where to read census forms, they are available on line at a range of places.  I guess the most popular are probably www.findmypast.co.uk and www.ancestry.co.uk both of which are subscription, but they have a range of packages depending on what/how you will use the site.  I think that findmypast might do pay as you go type packages.

Hi Chloe

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where in the world you are.

Apart from the 1881 census which is transcribed at www.familysearch.org , you will have to take out a subscription to Find My Past or Ancestry (or other similar sites) to view details from the other censuses.

We can't do look-ups from the 1911 census due to the terms and conditions of the site but there are hints and tips here

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,492718.0.html

But check out your local library to see if they offer free access to either of the sites, many do.

Don't know how much of this info you have:

John W Bradley m Margaret E Seed q1 1921, Chester-le-Street

and

Emily Bradley m Henry A Seed q3 1919, Lanchester

There are 3 relevant Bradley births registered in Chester-le-Street between 1921 and 1929 - I'll not put the names of the two younger ones for the reason given above, but the oldest was John.

There was just 1 birth, registered in 1924 in Lanchester, with surname Seed and mother's mn Bradley.

BTW, have you been in contact with your living relative in Newcastle? Are they able to give you any further info?
