Belfast streets 1887

My grandfather kept a scrap book.  On cover he wrote his name and address and dated it 1st February 1887.  I have tried to find the address in Belfast Street Directories, but have been unsuccessful.  He wrote: 7 Carnarvon Terrace,
Antrim road, Belfast.  The date is one year before he married and I was interested to find out if he was lodging with somebody or had taken accommodation for himself.

"Carnarvon Terrace" could be a terrace of houses on Antrim Road - if that's the case then 7 would be the number of the house in that terrace rather than the street number.

If you look at this 1901 directory for Antrim Road you'll see many, many places listed with house names, villas, etc.

Thank you for your help.  Unfortunately I still cannot find Carnarvon Terrace on the Antrim Road.

Unfortunately it may not be listed as such in directories. Sometimes you can use Google Streetview to find Terraces along a road (name usually above 1st storey at either end/both ends) but Antrim Road is very long and much of it has been rebuilt.

His name was Samuel Johnston.  He was in early twenties then and married the following year.  Subsequently the family lived on Ravenhill Road and seemed to congregate round that area of Belfast.

Carnarvon Terrace was part of Hillman Street, near the Antrim Road end. The 1887 street directory gives the occupier of no7 as John Nichol, plumber. So it looks like your ancestor was a lodger there.
The 1890 directory shows Samuel, a bank clerk, at 2 Ravenbank on Ravenhill Road. Many street directories are available online at PRONI website.
In 1901 Census he is at 210 Ravenhill Road(probably the same house) with his wife Florence and 4 children.

Thank you for that!  Yes, the Ravenhill Road Samuel Johnston is my grandfather.  I was interested to find out where he had lodged, as a family story was that he had lodged with his future mother-in-law and thus met his wife to be.  This was not the case and it is interesting to find that he was with someone apparently completely unrelated to him.  When I am next in Belfast, I shall try to find Hillman Street!  It is very good of you to take the trouble to research this for me - thank you again.
