Hi Dave,
I'm the great grandson of John Dickinson. Messrs Thomson and Clachrie in your photo share a family connection to the Dickinson family and I wondered where (or to whom) you are connected. Would you mind sharing that piece of information? We may be related.
Regards
Derek

Hi there, just wanted to point out a slight error in the information posted re the Cumming family from Kippford. It states they had a daughter called Hilda - she was in fact a cousin of their daughter Anne. Anne Cumming was my husbands grandmother. She married Alexander Wright who was a police officer from Dumfries.

Hello I found your posts very interesting as my great great grandfather John Burns (1859-1934) and family lived next door to John Cumming in Kippford on the 1891 census. They were at the Anchor Inn. John was a ship's carpenter, (an apprentice in 1881) in 1891-94. I have often wondered if he worked for John Cumming (its fascinating to see some pictures of him)? By 1901 John Burns was working away from the sea and ships as a ploughman at Nether Hazelfield Farm at Auchencairn? In the early 1900s 5 of his 9 children had left for the USA he also went to the States for several years before returning to D&G in the 1920s.
