Thank you Sandra for checking this for me.

I have just located Jane (Widowed) and her 3 children on the UK 1901 census listed under COWER.
At least I know they were in the UK in 1901 now.

Emmanuel is still a mystery - No Birth/marriage or death located

I still haven't found Jane on 1891 or 1911 as yet but I will keep checking varients.

I didn't manage to locate anything for Martin and Amy Kenny on any of the genealogy sites I subscribe too either.

Thank you for your help though - I do appreciate it.

Hi Debbie,

Jane (transcribed as John) is under Harrison with a husband William Harrison in 1911 in Kippax. Yorkshire. Also William and Harry Harrison are  Cowes on the image. The Harrison boys on the 1901 UK Census (except Robert) are also there, plus a couple of others.

Hi Sandra

Many many thanks for your help. Wow, the mystery deepens! AND more children!
Well Lane is the address both William & Harry Cowes give in 1914 & 1916 when they enlist for WW1.
Jane Cowes/Harrison marries in 1914 to John Crawley and is listed as Jane Cowes so I'm guessing she never marries William Harrison.

Apart from the 1911c when an Emmanuel Cowes is showing as a single Labourer (Born Devon) and living in Ratcliffe and on Harry's marriage certificate where Emmanuel is listed as a deceased miner - I cannot locate him at all anywhere. No Birth marriage or death.

If he "ran" away and left the family - then why would he use his own name again in 1911? (This is more of thinking out loud than a question to you).

My guess is he left the family and Jane told the children he had died though that wouldn't explain why there are no records for him. My second puzzle is if he wasn't called Emmanuel Cowes and had just used this name when he met Jane - why would he revert to using it again on the 1911 census?
(Again - this is me thinking out loud).

The next mystery is Amy & Martin Kenny - Maybe the family oral history got this wrong as I too cannot locate any for them.

So - I'm left with a big puzzle.

I'd like to thank you again for ALL your help and look-ups it's very much appreciated.
Kindest regards Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Don't think I've forgotten you - no luck with Emmanuel - a lack of them in BMD records so you would think he would stand out like a sore thumb !!

Haven't given up - concentrated on Amy but still cannot see her. So frustrating.  ???

Hi Sandra

Thank you SO MUCH.

This one is such a mystery!

I think that Jane did not marry either of her "husbands" - Emmanuel Cowes or William Harrison but we know for certain that she DID marry John Crawley. I can't locate Jane OR baby William Cowes on the 1891 either (Wm would be about 1/2 yrs of age) and he was born Manchester. I have tried Lancs on line for any combo of William/Emmanuel/Jane and just Jane and William but have drawn a blank.

Ancestry/Find my past and Genes Reunited haven't revealed anything else on Emmanuel other that 1911 record.

I think I may have to resort to purchasing her marriage certificate to John Crawley for her fathers name and that may reveal her maiden name but I'll double check with the cousins that they definitely don't have it 1st.

Thank you once again
A puzzled (and frustrated) Debbie

Hi Debbie,
Just came across your query.
Jane is in the 1891 Census as Jane Coles at Colbornes Farm, Pale Gate, Goosnargh, Preston, Lancashire with husband William and son William.
How have your searches gone since last year?
