Purvis Southsheilds Durham
« on: Saturday 07 April 12 16:24 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am hoping someone can help me.  I am very new to ancestry and have started to source our family heritage but I am just wondering how to check that I have actually found the records for the correct people as when starting I didn't have birth and death dates and there are many people with the same name around the same dates/locality.

So far working from current back in time I have found Albert Purvis born 22/10/1920 married to Margaret Lillie Quinn born 1918 in South Shields, Durham.
Albert has 2 brothers and a sister - Raymond Purvis born 1928, George Purvis born 1917 and Jean Purvis born 1925.  I have not been able to confirm that these are correct years as I have been unable to find a census record for the household so that I can then folllow through with the birth certificates.

Albert worked as an apprentice boiler maker at a shipyard on Tyne River when the MMS Kelly was being made around late 1930/early 1940 but I am not sure how to confirm these dates.

Albert & Margaret immigrated to Australian in 1951 through Sydney Harbour - but I cant find the passanger listing to confirm dates.
Albert's brothers Raymond (Fremantle Western Australia), George (Melbourne Australia) and sister Jean (Sydney Australia) also came to Australia in 1957 - again I haven't found an actual passanger list with date of arrival etc.  I don't know how to find death dates for these people but I think Jean died in 2010.

Their father is James Purvis who married Ann (Annie ?) Binnie (possibly born 1895  Castle ward Northumberland).  I think i have the right James Purvis born 1899 in South Shields, Durham and he was a turner machinist @ Electrical Engineering works.

I believe James has 6 siblings (Marshline 1898, Jane 1901, William 1902, Esther 1904, Robert 1906 & Elizabeth 1910) and his parents are William Purvis born 1864 a Seas Pilot who in 1891 married Esther Brown born 1877.

If someone is able to help me confirm that I actually have the correct James Purvis and hence the correct line then I will continue to search backwards.  Any other information would be very helpful.  I hope I am going about this all the correct way.
Thankyou.
Jasmina

Hi,

Free bmd has 6 Purvis births for South Shields, which have mother's maiden name as Binnie between 1915 - 1928, I will not post names as some may still be living.

FindMyPast has an Albert Purvis, b 1921, travelling from London to Sydney in 1951?

You'll need a subscription, or credits, to see the details.

The best way to determine if you have the right James is to purchase his marriage cert to Ann Binnie.

James Purvis Oct-Dec 1914 to Annie Binnie, Newcastle Upon Tyne (vol 10b 93).

The keel of HMS Kelly was laid on 26th August 1937, launched 25th October 1938, ans commissioned 23rd August 1939. http://ftp3.dns-systems.net/~hebburn/hebburn.org/pages/kelly/kelly.htm

Thankyou so much for such a quick reply and all that info, it seems I am on the right track.  I am a little confused though as the marriage date between James and Annie as 1914 would make him 15 and her 18 yrs old and also my husband is not aware that his father had a brother called James born 1915 as this would have been when his grandfather was just 16 years old.

When doing ancestry if it sounds unusual do you just assume that it is not part of the family tree ? Or do I assume that Annie fell pregnant before marriage and they had a son but I am not sure what happened to him so do I keep searching ?

Thanks
Jasmina

You still need the marriage certificate of Jams & Annie to confirm their ages, father's names, etc ;D

A tree on Ancestry has James born 1893?
But they have no documentary proof.

The simple rule when doing Family History, is to confirm as much as possible with documentary evidence.
Certificates, census returns, passenger lists, etc., etc.

I totally agree with KGarrad, If I had gone on by what my family had told me concerning my tree I would have had total chaos.

How have you proved that the parents were James Purvis & Annie Binnie, do you have one of the childrens birth certs?
