type of employment?
« on: Saturday 07 April 12 08:44 BST (UK) »
I have found 2 Irish brothers, one living in Bargoed and working as a colliery timberman. The other living in Blackwood but job unknown.
My understanding is that the brothers' were only in this area for maybe a year.
Dates would be approx 1912 - 1914 so they aren't showing up on census but only on ship passenger lists.
Is it likely that the brother in Blackwood would have travelled to the pit in nearby Bargoed?
I have recently read that Blackwood was not a mining town so if he wasn't a miner what other job may he have been employed at?
Thanks in advance.

Not true!
My grandfather worked at the Oakdale Pit in Blackwood.
There were also numerous small pits in the area, and even today the Blackwood Miners Institute plays a large part in the town's affairs.

Many thanks for that.
I wonder if any of them have retained employment records?  ???
