Ann Belfrage/ Margaret Storrar, Fife
« on: Friday 06 April 12 23:17 BST (UK) »
Hi and Happy Easter,    :)
I wonder if anyone can help with this problem?
My wife's GGGrandmother was Ann Belfrage who married David Hoy at Cramond in 1836. In 1841 they were living at Rameldry, Kettle and her birthplace was given as Auchtermuchty. In 1881 she was at Largo, aged 69, birthplace Auchtermuchty.
She died in 1884 at Largo. Her death cert gives her age as 72, her husband as David Hoy, vintner, and her parents as John Belfrage (linen weaver) and "Agnes" Belfrage - M.S. Storrar. I think that the "Agnes" was possibly a misunderstanding between her son-in-law and the registrar.
I can't find a marriage in those names but there is John Belfrage (linen weaver) and Margaret Storrar who were married ca 1814, according to LDS. The names of Ann's first two girls tally with her mother and grandmother, Margaret and Alison.
I can't come up with any more birth details for Ann Belfrage nor a definite marriage date for John B and Margaret S, but it's reasonable to assume that they were connected - possibly through adoption, or an early liaison. Does anyone have any info?

Also,  I looked into this Margaret Storrar and wondered how certain is her parentage? John Belfrage seems to have been widowed before the 1851 census & there are 2 options for his wife: 1) Mgt Storrar of Cash, Strathmiglo died 1838 aged 52:
2) Mgt Storrar of Nether Urquhart, Strathmiglo, dau of Rich Storrar & Mgt Paterson, died June 1845, buried 3 July 1845 aged 50. She was christened 25 Dec 1794 at the Associate Session, Auchtermuchty so that agrees with her age at death.
The first Margaret S coincidentally died at Cash where her possible widower was still residing in 1851. So I think it points to her as being the one I'm looking for, but I can't find any birth details for her.
Any ideas, please?   ???

Jim

Hi, NorrieG,

That's very kind and helpful, thank you. It's given me a bit more to mull over.

You wouldn't by any chance have some information on the other Margaret Storrar, would you?
It's the one "Margaret Storrar of Cash, Strathmiglo died 1838 aged 52", to see if there's any more detailed information on the headstone, if there is one.
The husband of Margaret, John Belfrage, died aged 80 in 1866 in hospital in Edinburgh so I don't think there would be a memorial to him at Strathmiglo - but you never know.

You're a pal. Thanks again :)

Jim

Hi Jim, hope you received my email. I have removed Richard Storrar and Margaret Paterson from my Wikitree. With the help of the 1841 Strathmiglo census, showing Margaret and Mary Storrar living at Nether Urquhart, and the information on the headstones kindly provided by NorrieG, it makes them being my Margaret's parents a bit unlikely. I'll keep searching and let you know if I find anything. Thanks for making me aware of Ann Belfrage. I've looked at her info and added her to my tree.
                                                                        Cheers

Hi, Stuart
I received your e-mail dated 9 April, thanks, if that's the one you're referring to.
Just to let anyone who is following this thread, or the Christian Belfrage one, know what's going on I'll reproduce a bit of what I wrote to you.

"I just found the following facts from the 1841 census for Strathmiglo North West, -  Nether Urquhart, I think.

Richard Storrar , age 50, Proprietor, living with his wife Helen Young and their two children, Richard and David.
Alongside them in another property, same address are:-
Margaret Storrar, age 40, Independent and Mary Storrar, age 30, Independent.

Obviously they're his sisters who are living together and unmarried,
Unfortunately, the 1841 doesn't give marital status but I doubt that those times would have allowed Margaret to leave her husband and family. The social stigma would have been too great.
By the 1851 census Margaret had died, June 1845, and Mary died in August 1848.

So, to my mind, we're looking for another Margaret Storrar."

Pinning down the 'Margaret Storrar from Cash, Strathmiglo, died 1838' would solve it.

It's a bit of a bind having to chop a branch off, especially if you've done a lot of work on it. Sorry! :-[

Thanks again too to NorrieG for his help.  :)

Keep looking,

Jim

Hi, Norrie

My thanks again for looking.
I got the information from the FFHS disk, but their publications don't cover Strathmiglo Cemetery MIs, unfortunately.
Hopefully something will turn up.

Jim

Hi Jim, a bit late but I read your email today. I had to use my works email and I've been off shift. Anyway, still looking for the elusive Margaret Storrar. Found a James Storer or Storrar and Ann Miller or Millar on LDS. Children are Christain b1781, Jean b1783, Ann b1785 and John b1798 or 1799 (1799 on Scotlandspeople). The spelling for John is different to the first three, but looks like the same family. The given name Ann would fit in nicely with Ann Belfrage. No Margaret, but a big space in between if they are the same parents. Maybe her birth wasn't recorded. I'll look more into this when I get time. Hope I'm not barking up the wrong family tree.
                                       Happy hunting   Stuart
