The Maher Mollies of Thurlesbeg and Lee family of Freighduff
« on: Friday 06 April 12 00:08 BST (UK) »
Hello to any Cashel area experts.  I need a bit of help to pin down a connection.  Basically I have a William Maher and Mary Lee, both born around the 1820s, who ended up living in Thurlesbeg, just north of Cashel, in the 1860s and beyond.  Not sure of death dates yet, would have to order quite a few certs tonarrow that down. I do know Wm was dead by 1892 at latest.

I have reason to believe that Mary Lee was a daughter of Patrick Lee and Mary Maher of Freaghduff/Freighduff/Freaghdough and therefore a sister of David Lee who lived past 1901 census.  However I have no proof that Patrick was Mary Lee's Dad and can't get to the NLI to spend hours or days combing through parish microfilms. Boherlahan/Dualla RC parish isnt available on rootsireland.ie.

So does anyone have any records proving the birth of a Mary Lee to Patrick and Mary of Freighduff?  Also, is Boherlahan/Dualla the right RC parish for Freighduff?

Secondly, I believe that  Willam Maher's family may have had the nickname the Maher Mollies, to distinguish them from other Maher families in that region. Does this ring a bell with anyone and,if so, what else do you know about that family, apart from William's wife being Mary Lee and knowing their children included Alice (b. 1864 who became Sister Mary Columba in the Josephites convents centred on Goulburn NSW), James (my GGF), John and Patrick?

Thanks for your attention.

PS William may be the person listed in Nodstown North in Griffiths Valuation and/or in Nodstown in Bassett's 1889 directory but not sure of this.

Freighduff and Thurlesbeg are both in the Parish of Boherlahan Dualla.

I can confirm that Mary Lee was baptised in Dualla and was the daughter of Patrick Lee and Mary Meagher of Freighduff. She was their sixth child and a sister to David you mentioned.

She married William Maher on the 18th Feb 1857, they had James, Mary, Patrick, John and Alice.

Mary's sister Johanna Lee married a Timothy Maher and they lived in Freighduff, one of their daughter Mary became Sister Angela Meagher and died in 1939 at the Sacred Heart Convent, Melbourne and another of their daughters was Margaret, sister Gabriel Meagher who is mentioned in "Held in our Hearts" the story of the Sisters of Mercy of the Goulburn Congregation. Both also appear in articles of the Boherlahan Dualla Historical journal (2005 and 2008 with photographs). It is interesting that their cousin Alice was also in Goulburn.

I have a lot of information on the Lees so you can contact me privately. I can find out about the Molly Mahers, I am not familiar with the nickname but I am more au fait with the Dualla side of the Parish.

We have a very active Historical publication and would be delighted to help

That's great information- sorry for the delay in reply, I only noticed yesterday I had a response.

I will be in touch with you shortly. By the way, I've received fresh information that the Thurlesbeg Mahers were called the Maher Mollies rather than the Molly Mahers and I've changed my original post appropriately.

Thanks again.

I believe I may also be related to these Lees and Mahers/Meaghers in Freaghduff.  All four of my paternal great-grandparents are living in Freaghduff in the 1901 census.  My grandmother's father is another Timothy Maher who married Hanora (Nora) Lee.  I do not know who their parent are, but since my great-grandfather named his son James, I have thought it possible that his father may have also been a James and his grandfather a Timothy.  My grandfather's father, Matthew McGrath (son of Thomas McGrath), married Mary Ryan (daughter of Philip Ryan) who was a widow previously married to a Howard (I believe a Patrick Howard).  I am interested in contacting any relatives or anyone with more information on these families.

My GGGgrandfather was Timothy Maher (Meagher) who married Margaret Ryan around Freighduff I 1800-1810. They had 2 sons who became priests, a son James, my ancestor John Maher and a sister Catherine who married a Flanagan - the last brother and sister came out to Australia, John lived in Victoria and Catherine in NSW.

John and wife Eliza's first child was Thomas. Thomas had a son John Thomas Maher, my grandfather.
I believe old family graves are at Ballysheehan.

This should help at least to understand the Freighduff Mahers:

Patrick and Timothy (Thady) Meagher were brothers.

Timothy Meagher of Freighduff born c. 1785 died 16th February 1854 aged 65, buried in Ballysheehan ancient church cemetery. From two monument headstones at Ballysheehan comes the following information:

Timothy married Margaret Ryan who died 18th March 1881 aged 86 years.
Their son James died 24th January 1882 aged 64.
James’ wife was Ellen who died March 1900 aged 82 years.

Of Timothy and Margaret’s children, James stayed in Freighduff, while Catherine and John migrated to Australia, William and Patrick became Irish priests.
James and Ellen had a son Timothy Maher who died 24th March 1932 aged 73 years. His wife Nora (nee Lee) died around 1933.

Buried in the same spot are their infant grandchildren Francis and Thomas Forde.

Timothy Meagher had a brother Patrick Meagher also of Freighduff (Freaghduff).
Patrick senior is not mentioned on this headstone, do not know his date of death.
His son Patrick died 19th November 1842 aged 22 years.
His son Thomas Maher died 24th November 1894 aged 83 years.
His daughter Bridget died 4th June 1897 aged 82 years.
Patrick’s son Timothy died 25th September 1915 aged 92 years.
His wife Johanna (nee Lee) died 11th August 1903.
