I agree it's two separate placenames as well. I've often seen commas omitted between words in addresses. Not to sound like a broken record but I think it would be good to at least rule out my suggestion of an unofficial placename. Some local knowledge might be useful. Tulla has a community website that seems to be updated regularly

. Would you consider sending them an email?
I think there are lots of instances of unofficial placenames in Ireland. Part of the townland I am from myself has an unofficial name. It doesn't appear on the census or in Griffith's Valuation but it still exists and people use it for all sorts of documentation. The County Council even has it on road signs these days. But technically it doesn't exist!

thanks for last two posts. I will try the local Tulla contact above.
I hope to get to Tulla in August myself too.
I will start working on the basis of it being two separate parts of an address.
I have just sent for a copy of the English will where it is mentioned as the address of my great grandfathers brother who was executor. There might be a bit more information when I get this.
I really appreciate the help

It is a postal address...Cappa, Tulla, Co Clare not 'Cappa Tulla'
Just like saying Chelsea London. there is no Chelsea London but there is a Chelsea, London!

Thanks for that.
I had thought of it as Cappa, Tulla more recently - Initially I thought it was one as it was written without the comma.

I think the area you are looking for is ardboula or affick tulla.Cappa is an old name for a townland in Affick tulla.Ardboula is an other name used for Affick.I think you will find that a John.E.McMahon went to school in Knockjames nearby, i hope this is the answer you are looking for.

Hello
that is exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks so much for that.
Thats a huge piece of information for me.
Cappa Tulla was written on a marriage notice in the newspaper when John E Mc Mahon was getting married so I knew it had to exist.
Many thanks
