cappa tulla
« on: Thursday 05 April 12 21:30 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a placename called Cappa Tulla. My great grandfather Daniel McMahon moved from Cappa Tulla to Durham about 1880. His brother John McMahon was listed as executor of his will and it says on the will that John was from Cappa Tulla.
I cant find any reference to CappaTulla in the census and I spoke to a lady in the Corofin centre who hadnt heard of Cappa Tulla either

I wonder if this could be two place names..

there are quite a few townlands in Co Clare beginning with 'Capp' (about 30), and a number of townlands, and a town, named 'Tulla' or similar, as well as a barony named Tulla Upper and a civil parish named Tulla.

Yes the name of the place is definately Cappa Tulla.
It is as mentioned above in a will and also mentioned in a notice my grand father put in a newpaper in 1911 for his marriage as his homeplace. In both places it is written the same - Cappa Tulla. I cant find any reference to that placename in a census. My grand father had left Clare by the 1901 census and he was raised by relatives whose name I dont know so i am a bit stuck.

Checked 1901 census (since McMahon mentioned in "Cappa Tulla" in 1887 and 1911) and found McMahons In Cappagh, Co. Clare, as well as Cappagh Pier & Cappagh South & Cappaghabaun Park, etc. (search for McMahon with Cappagh* as the townland and Clare as county-

Thanks, i did that but nothing has come up for Cappa Tulla. I am pretty sure that it is in East Clare near Tulla somewhere.

this is a tithe applotment transcription for Tulla http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/tithe_applot/tulla_tab.htm

The name Cappagh appears in the right hand column in relation to people in the townland of Affogh (possibly correctly Affick?). There might be  an explanation on this site - maybe Cappagh is a local name for part of the townland?

thanks for that but the name appears in an official document - a will in England and it was also put in a marriage notice in a newspaper in 1912 exactly the same as the will from 1887. I cannot understand why the name of the townland does not appear in the census as it was around that time that the townland must have been inhabited.
Thanks for the help so far

I still think it's two placenames - i.e. townland/town followed by post town. Still the standard format for rural addresses.

Tulla county Clare was a post town - so I think the location relates to one of the townlands nearby named Cappa, Cappagh or similar..
