Looking for more info re a marriage - SNOWDEN Mary and WATSON Robert

Hi

I am actually interested in Nancy Snowden who appears to have given birth to my great x3 grandfather in October 1843 in Skipton workhouse.  I understand Nancy died shortly after this birth if not during.

It appears that Thomas went to live with a Mary and Robert Watson (sometimes listed on censuses as a son with their surname, and some a nephew with his own.)

I THINK Mary was Nancy's sister and I am tring to confirm or deny this.  I have just located the marriage between Mary and Robert and was going to order their certificate to try and ascertain who her father was.

The PR transcripts state:-
5 1 1837 SNOWDEN Mary Cowling Spin WATSON Robert Cowling Weaver Bach
so obviously this is prior to the registration.

Soooo I am wondering now, if there is anywhere else I might glean more information about this elusive family.  Has anyone any ideas please.

How old was Nancy when she died?

Whereabouts in Yorkshire was Mary born - if she was Nancy's sister - then Nancy may have been born in the same place

I can't find Thomas as Snowden or Watson before 1871 - can you tell us where Robert and Mary were living in 1851 and 1861 and their ages.

There is this 1851 entry but I wasn't 100% certain it was the same family although they were living in  Cowlinge and all shown as born there and the marriage took place in Cowling as per opening post

I should have done this in the first place - check the 1851 family in 1861!!

It is the right 1851 family - Thomas is shown as Snowdon in 1861

Ann in 1851 becomes Nancy in 1861

Looks like the answers lie in Cowling parish records but they don't seem to be online.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your help.

I tried at first to find Thomas - he is my known line for definate.  I know for a fact he was born illegitimately to Nancy in 1843.  I have traced his marriage and subsequent children etc.  The rest (backwards) is a bit (lot!!) of guesswork.

I started to try and find him on the censuses prior to his marriage.  I couldn't find him in 1851 at all, but located him in 61 with Mary and Robert Watson, as you found Carole.  I checked this family in 51 and found their "son" Thomas Watson with them.  I have assumed at this stage that Thomas Watson is actually my Thomas Snowden.  Post 61 he is married and easier to trace.

I do have access to the Cowling/ Kildwick Pr transcripts and have located a marriage of Mary SNOWDEN and Robert Watson in 1837 in Kildwick.
From that I second guessed they may of been sisters.  THere is no trace of Nancy (or Ann or suchlike) post 1841 so I assumed at this stage she died and her sister and family raised her illegitmate son.

I have possible births for Nancy and Mary but I can't link them.  I may have found Nancy in 1841 living near Keighley with a John Birtwistle and his family.  John was an innkeeper and Nancy a female servant.

I KNOW I have made some assumptions and quite happy to have these confirmed or denied, but I am stuck !!!

I think on balance - Nancy & Mary were probably sisters

This appears to be Nancy's death but no age shown and nothing on Yorks BMD!!
