Does anyone know the year of the last burial in the Old Moffat Cemetery?

Are you sure you are not referring to the Moffat Cemetery in Moffat just north of Dumfries (Dumfries & Galloway).  I believe it is still open.

There are two cemeteries in Moffat.  There is the one in the town (the old one), near the Black Bull, and another on the way out of town.

It's the older of the two I'm interested in , at the moment.

I have an MI booklet for the old Moffat Cemetery unfortunately it doesn't say when the last burial was but if you want me to look someone up let me know

Just thought on if the MI is post 1855 it may not be in the booklet, doh  ::)

Correct !  I was involved with publishing this DGFHS booklet and took photographs of most of the readable stones in this old graveyard.  I have had a look through our archive and find the latest date on a memorial as 1932.  (see photo)
I don't think it can ever be said for certain that an inscription actually represents a burial in any lair.
These stones are family memorials and can often refer to family members buried elsewhere.
In this case though I would assume that this is the burial of Margaret Elizabeth Forrester aged 83.
So 1932 seems to be the latest date recorded on a stone in this graveyard.

True, I found out that two of my ggg grandparents  had two sons who died in America from an MI, without it I wouldn't have even known about the sons.  The work you do is much appreciated.  :)

I'm trying to find the burial places of James McKnight and Mary Bell.  They would have been born around 1800.

They had a son, also called James, who married Jessie Lachlan.

I know of the McKnight / Halliday headstone in the Old Cemetery.

This is an attempt to resolve the James McKnight Conundrum, which is posted on this page.
