Patrick Fennelly

My grandfather, Patrick Fennelly, was born in Kilkenny, Tipperary (Doon Parish) around 1858. 
At some point in time, he relocated to Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  He got married early in 1890.   After that I am able to trace his family (wife, children).  I would like to know more about his early days in Ireland.   I have no idea where to start.   Thanks for your help!

Patrick's birth is before the start of civil birth records in 1864, so you will need to check church records.  see :

Do you have his father's name and occupation from the marriage cert ?

are you sure about the location ?

I see a civil parish named Doon in Co. Tipperary North Riding, but there's no townland in it named Kilkenny....

I have Patrick and Ellen's birth certificate. They were married on January 26, 1890.   His father's name is Timothy, and his profession is a farmer.  The certificate says he is deceased.  Patrick worked in the shipyard in Newcastle.

Sorry, I have County Kilkenny, Tipperary, Doon Parish, but my knowledge of Ireland is very limited.

where do you get Doon Parish from? A parish is more specific than a county - I just wondered.
There is a Kilcooly Parish in Tipperary.

Griffiths Valuation (abt 1850s) has no Timothy Fennelly in Tipperary (although doesn't mean that there aren't any) but there are a couple in Kilkenny.

There is a death of a Timothy Fennely 62 yrs (born about 1807) in 1869
Kilkenny  volume 3  pg 433

location doesn't make much sense to me at the moment either ... there are Civil parishes named Doon in Counties Limerick and Tipperary but none in Co. Kilkenny. There could also be RC parishes with the name..

What's the source of the location you have ?

I know he was Roman Catholic

I know he was from Kilkenny (it's on the UK census from 1911)

Honestly, I wasn't keeping good records when I started out doing this.   

I'm now keeping better copies.

My grandfather was also Patrick Fennelly, he was one of eleven brothers born in County Cork; most of them went to America to build the railway but he joined the army and eventually gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a keen boxer; in fact, in 1924 he coached the British Olympic boxing team.
When he left the army he was given a grace and favour house in Bushey Park called the White Lodge. He was very famous for his daily constitutionals around the park, followed closely by a couple of chickens a cat and a dog. I remember visiting him when I was a small child and although he could kill a man with his bare hands in a matter of seconds, I remember him to be the gentlest, loving and kindest grandad.
