William Macartney

[Milltown]

Trying to trace a William Macartney who emigrated to Canada from Northern Ireland in early 1900's.  Went on to live in Calgary where he married.  Do not know wife's name but I do know they did not have any children.

Can anyone help with suggestion where to search?

A few more details would help the search.  When was William born and where ? Who were the parents ?

William was born in 1886 in what is now Northern Ireland.  His parents were Matthew and Ann Macartney.  Do not know his mothers maiden name.

He was born in Cromkill near Kells, Co Antrim, Ireland.

Other than this I am at a loss.

There is a passenger list for William MCCARTNEY, 38, married, occupation laundry supt., returning on the Montcalm 4 April 1926 from Belfast to St. John, New Brunswick.
He was returning home to his wife, Mrs. McCartney, at 454 Rosdale Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Irish contact was his brother Mr. M. McCartney Cromkill Ballymena Antrim.
William had been in Canada between the years 1906 and 1925 in Winnipeg.

Did your William have a brother with the initial M?  If this is your William he might have moved to Calgary at a later date.  You can browse the Henderson directories for Calgary at this site

If this tallies with family information there are two possible marriages in Winnipeg for a William McCartney.
One to Florence Beatrice Baines 12/07/1910 at Winnipeg (Groom was William John)
the other to Louise Jane Odger 10/12/1918 at Winnipeg.

Thank you very much for this.  I have an old photograph of William Macartney and on the back it refers to his wife as Louise so the 1918 marriage to Louise Odger is a possibility.

Regarding the passenger list William does have a brother M (Matthew) Macartney who lived at Cromkill nr Ballymena so again this is looking good.  The only problem is that the surname is spelt differently.  While people generally spell it McCartney the correct spelling is Macartney and I would assume that it would have been spelt correctly on the marriage records.

1. How do you know he was in Canada between 1906 and 1925 in Winnipeg?
2. How did you obtain the address in Winnipeg you mention above?
3. Is it possible for me to view the Montcalm passenger list you mention for 4 April 1926

This is a ships passenger search and is not name indexed so you have to flip through the pages to find your man but at least you have the ships name and sailing date to make it easier.

As to spelling of names - don't be too concerned about that.  So many records that we think now should be accurate in detail weren't back then.  The cost of the marriage certificate would be $12.00 Canadian if you want to definitely find out if it your relative.  Parents names would be listed - you might even get lucky and find out the maiden name of his mother.

To both of you thank you very much for all your help.  I had almost given up hope of tracing my Gt Uncle at all. 

Do you know if it is possible to view the full marriage certificate before buying or are full details only available on the certificate.  Also can the order be paid for online and then downloaded or does it have to be done by post?
