The local French newspaper for Bordeaux and Dax is "Sud Ouest" :  http://www.sudouest.fr/
Unfortunately, their online archives begin in 1980 : http://www.sudouest.fr/arches/page2col.php?sk=archives.sk
You only can have a look at the first page (called "la Une") of which they sell a facsimile : http://unes-anniversaires.sudouest.fr/

Hi Sarah, I don't know how long ago you posted this request. In 1972 I was camping in Dax and visiting the hospital every day because one of my friends had been taken in for an operation. As far as I remember, towards the end of his stay, a coach from an English school for handicapped children crashed on the R.N.10 and some of the injured were brought into the hospital. I remember one gentleman who was mobile and we talked and I did some translating for him. The British Consul was there, as well as other members of the party. I have a letter that I sent home to my parents at about that time giving the details of the accident that I'd been told about. I could pass these on to you if it would be of any help. Unfortunately I don't have any contacts in that area who could possibly help with more information, I'm sorry.
