WHITAKER James and HINERARO Peti (who's daughter married a BICKERTON)
« on: Tuesday 03 April 12 10:16 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I've been working on my family tree and I've been able to get documents all the way up to Isabella Whitaker who married Lewis Davies Bickerton.  Her parents were (supposedly) James Whitaker and Peti Hineraro (a.k.a. Betty Whitaker).  And Peti's father was (supposedly) Potatau Te Wherowhero however I have found not a single document supporting the relationship between Peti and her supposed daughter and Te Wherowhero and Peti.

Is anyone able to help me here?

Hello, I can see only one death record for an Isabella Bickerton and that is in 1927 at age 73 putting her year of birth at about 1954. Her marriage appears to have taken place in 1874. I can't find a birth for Isabella or a likely marriage for her father James. I'm not sure where in NZ these people lived. An Intention to Marry look-up might be helpful. It could be that Isabella's birth is recorded in parish records, but it might not have been registered.
Craig.

Hi, brilliant Althea. To add to the Whangaroa baptisms that Althea found are Jane, Margaret, Ellen and John, all chritianed in 1848, sorry no exact date given. Of New Zealand deaths for James Whittaker there is one in 1905 aged 73, he would have been about 16 in 1948, and one in 1862, a James Dunn Whittaker who died at the age of 40. This James Dunn Whittaker was buried in Bolton Memorial Park in Wellington. I couldn't find a likely death for a James Whitaker, with
one t.
Regards,
Craig.

Hi again,

Thank you for the support in such quick replies.  I've been able to find the death in BDM and you're definitely right about her age and birth.

I haven't been able to find an intention to marry between James and Betty, nor that Betty ever existed apart from in relation to Isabella's birth.  There also seems to be no support that she was a daughter of Te Wherowhero.  I'd love to find her lineage and I'll be stopping by the archives next week but I fear that her life might be relatively unrecorded.

Cheers

If one partner is maori, in those early years, a traditonal maori wedding would be held..registration did not apply
Betty is merely the anglicised name taken..by the sounds of it

Whakapapa websites plus google will allow you to find more

I don't know what you mean about Betty not existing
If you go back to LDS you will find bits of tree..but just in maori names
Bye

Thanks a lot for your help.

I think the Maori name is Peti rather than Betty.

In regards to 'non-existing' it's because I can't find documents on her anyway, I'm sure she did I just can't find proof.

Will keep looking

Cheers
